The ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel Is Such a Tease

Those hoping to see Michael Keaton return to his Beetlejuice role can be both equally excited and disappointed.

Tim Burton and Keaton both talked “the Ghost with the most” this weekend, only they shared conflicting information.

Burton, out promoting Big Eyes, tells CS:

“It’s a character that I love and I miss and I miss actually working with Michael. There’s only one Betelgeuse. We’re working on a script and I think it’s probably closer than ever and I’d love to work with him again.”

And then, over at Deadline, Keaton says the opposite:

“Tim Burton and I have emailed about it. We’re both in the same situation (of always being busy on other projects). Neither one of us gets tired of the conversation… Tim says he’s working on something, then goes away for a while. At some point, someone is going to say we really want to do it. You don’t want to fuck it up, so it has to be perfect.”

The one constant is that both Burton and Keaton desire to team up for the Warner Bros. produced sequel that’s been penned by Seth Grahame Smith. The good news to come from this is that Burton would be more in the know than Keaton, who is waiting on Burton to announce as his next project. If Burton thinks they’re closer than ever, this means they truly are closer than ever.

Don’t know what to feel about this one! The first ‘Bettlejuice’ was just perfect in terms of script, design, actors, story but I feel there’s no actual reason for a sequel to happen after so many years, don’t you think? And the universe will be all CGI which is not the essence of the first one. I just hope this project dies as time passes by…

awww, c’mon, the more beetljuice the better! it gives fans something to look forward to and be excited about regardless of the inevitable 2000’s suckage(Ahem, a nightmare on elm street remake) 😉

  • Considering they’re doing the right thing and taking their time with this one, I’m totally down for a new sequel.

I’m not gonna lie, I’d be excited to see a sequel after all this time. Love Michael Keaton, and I really like Burton’s older films. Would be awesome if they could recapture the feel of the first movie.

My worry isn’t Keaton. Its the fact that exiting the 90s Burton became a hack.

I hope they can get back Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder.

I wouldn’t mind seeing this sequel if they dropped Beetlejuice into new surroundings and we don’t get Baldwin/Davis back (maybe Ryder, she deserves some new screen time). Just don’t rehash the original somehow.

I don’t trust Tim Burton with anything these days so ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel is more reason to be ‘scare’ than ‘cheers’. Burton’s reliant on CGI is so over the top cartoony (Alice in Wonderland) that it becomes such a distraction. I have no doubt that 90’s Burton would have given us a classic ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with Johnny Depp had it came out in 1993 instead. File this one under ‘not going to happen’.
