Before I saw It Follows, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s mockumentary What We Do In the Shadows (read our review) was a shoe-in for horror film of the year.
The film follows an endearingly unhip quartet of vampires, and was winner of the Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness People’s Choice Award. For good reason. It’s both a refreshing new take on vampires, and also absolutely hilarious. It’s a bit inside baseball, meaning only horror fans will get a lot of the jokes, but that’s a good thing because it means they weren’t pandering to general audiences.
Anyways, it felt like a one-shot of a film, but apparently a sequel is already being planned.
Clement confirmed to Stuff in New Zealand that a sequel to the vampire mockumentary is in the planning stages, and that it focuses on Rhys Darby’s control-freak werewolf Anton. The werewolves make a hilarious appearance in the movie and set the stage for a sequel perfectly.
What We Do In the Shadows is now on home video and is a must-must-must see. In it, “Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with the mundane—like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming roommate conflicts.”
