R.I.P. David A. Prior Dies At Age 59

Sad news as friends and family have announced the passing of filmmaker David A. Prior after a “…long battle with failing health“. He died this past weekend, days after his 59th birthday.

Prior was the man behind many cult sci-fi, action, and horror titles throughout the 80’s and 90’s, although he began making movies again in the late 00’s. Some of the titles he wrote and directed were War Of The Living Dead, The Final Sanction (which starred Maniac Cop‘s Robert Z’Dar), Night Trap, and Sledgehammer, which is thought to be the first ever shot-on-tape slasher.

We send our condolences to his friends and family.

  • He was truly an early pioneer in Direct-To-Video genre films and even had his own late 80s/early 90s DTV film company AIP(Action International Pictures),which was a predecessor for the latter likes of PM Entertainment and Nu Image/Millenium Films,as well as the brother of actor Ted Prior(RAW NERVE,POSSESSED BY THE NIGHT).

    59? Still pretty darn young.

Worked as his first AD on Mutant Species.. He taught me so much about how to cover action from multi camera setups. My favorite quote from him is “We’re here for a good time, not for a long time!”
He also gave many now established techs and producers their early opportunities to practice their craft…
