Hideo Nakata’s Psychological Thriller ‘Chaos’ Gets French Remake
Jalil Lespert, the helmer of Yves Saint Laurent and the big-budget series “Versailles,” is set to reteam with producer Wassim Beji on French remake of Japanese genre master Hideo Nakata’s Chaos, Variety reports out of AFM.
The French makeover will topline French stars Romain Duris, Charlotte Lebon and Lespert.
Beji, who is producing the film via his banner WY Prods., has tapped Australian scribe Andrew Bovell (A Most Wanted Man) to pen the adaptation.
Beji said the untitled pic will transpose the action in Paris and follow the same narrative thread while including many new twists.
The producer described the project as a psychological thriller in the spirit of Gone Girl but with a strong sexual tension.
The iMBD described the original, from the director of Ringu:
“A man gets involved in a kidnapping scheme with the wife of a wealthy businessman. She lets herself be tied up and confined in his house while he sends the ransom demand. When he returns home that night, however, he finds her laying dead on the floor. In a panic he buries her body deep in the woods and tries to return to his ordinary life. One day, he thinks he spots her walking down the street. Is his mind playing tricks on him, or has she somehow returned from the grave?”
The film will start lensing in France on Jan. 18.
After pulling in $28 million at the worldwide box office this month, director (and star) Dev Patel’s critically acclaimed action-thriller Monkey Man is now available to watch at home.

Monkey Man is currently 88% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with Bloody Disgusting’s head critic Meagan Navarro awarding the film 4.5/5 stars in her review out of SXSW back in March.
Meagan raves, “While the violence onscreen is palpable and painful, it’s not just the exquisite fight choreography and thrilling action set pieces that set Monkey Man apart but also its political consciousness, unique narrative structure, and myth-making scale.”

She adds, “Monkey Man presents Dev Patel as a new action hero, a tenacious underdog with a penetrating stare who bites, bludgeons, and stabs his way through bodies to gloriously bloody excess. More excitingly, the film introduces Patel as a strong visionary right out of the gate.”
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
