‘Sadako vs Kayako’: Evil ‘The Ring’ and ‘The Grudge’ Spirits Do Battle (Trailer)

Move over Freddy and Jason, two powerful Japanese spirits are about to go to battle.

As I wrote before, I was part of the J-horror craze that began in the early 00’s with films like Ringu, Ju-On, Kairo, Audition, Dark Water, and many more.

But the two that stood out were the franchises Ringu (The Ring) and Ju-On (The Grudge), both centered around a curse and feature a super scary evil spirit. Ringu and The Grudge both lived on to have massive franchises, and both were remade here in the States with sequels (Rings, the third The Ring, comes out in October).

Now, after a brilliant April Fool’s Day joke went viral, Kadokawa and NBCUniversal Japan have joined forces for the ultimate J-horror battle: Sadako vs Kayako.

Grotesque director Koji Shiraishi is behind the camera with Mizuki Yamamoto caught in the middle of the two battling horror icons.

Ju-On: The Final, billed as the final Ju-On, opened in Japan on June 20. Sam Raimi is producing a re-remake here in the States.

Sadako vs Kayako is already in production for release in 4-D next June in Japan.

Shit, here’s a perfect teaser in which the hand of Kayako crushes a VHS tape cursed by Sadako. In fact, I couldn’t help but gets chills watching the two J-horror icons appear in the same trailer – it definitely brought me back to the same emotional place when Freddy vs Jason was released. What do you guys think?

    What do we think?
We think the same things that excite or frighten an 8 yr old, does the same for you.

Whoopee shit. Another film with chalky Japanese kids with their mouths always agape.
    Booga Booga….SNORE!

    • Fake Emotion

If you don’t like Japanese horror why read this article, J horror is the best horror if you ask me.

      • Creepshow

“If” I asked you. I didn’t, go away.

        • Fake Emotion

They didn’t ask you to comment on the article saying you don’t like J horror you go away.

          • Creepshow

I didn’t say I liked or disliked anything fuckstick.
Go play a video game avidly.

          • Fake Emotion

That’s how is came across in your first comment, if you didn’t mean it change it.

          • Creepshow

I’ll get right on it. After my brother’s leg straightens out.

      • pati.ruby

Well, J horror is DEFINITELY not the best horror if you ask me.

        • Fake Emotion

Apologies, but my reply got much longer than I meant it too, I would be profoundly thankful to you if you read it, as many people on Youtube and other sites refuse to read my long replies, for them being “too long” , ” a waste of time”, “not reading”, and many other reasons, Thank You.

Okay thats fine your opinion, I just happen to like that J-Horror is most often about the atmosphere and being creepy/forboding, along with telling a story of some kind that makes you feel not just for the humans in danger but also for the monsters/ghosts who have usually suffered, while Western Horror doesn’t just try to scare you it tries to startle you and gross you out as well, this is scence through the large amount of gore, blood, and jump scares in Western Horror, now I can handle gore in J Horror if its anime or a video game, however I cannot stomach any forms grotesque and detailed gore in Live Action, and WH loves to gross out its audience, and in modern times it also has an overdepandance on jump “scares” which aren’t really scary they just startle you, and I am also unable to handle those not because they scare but because even when I know its comming I can’t still get startled, now J Horror can also do these things as well and some movies do, but as a whole J Horror does not depend on those things like Western Horror does, and this is why to me J Horror is better, it wants to scare you with its atmosphere, world, and story, instead of with gore and jump scares, however its fine that you like WH as it means that we are different and that is a wonderful thing, there are genres I feel the West does better than Japan, and to me Horror is not and overall will never be one, there may be a few WH films, games, and TV series, that are better than the games, anime, manga, and films made in J Horror but overall things like the Anime Monster, the Fatal Frame and Corpse Party games, and the manga by Junji Itoi are all better than most if not all Western Horror, I respect you and your opinion I just feel that WH is to cliche, and so is J Horror often, but I enjoy it more, as you enjoy WH more, sorry going on so long I just wanted to reply with this, thank you.

          • pati.ruby

I never said I liked western horror better. You jumping on that conclusion makes me assume that you don’t know enough of the world of horror. It’s not an attack, all I mean is that you should spend some time getting to know other cultures/types. It’s not binary.

Also, I never said I didn’t like japanese horror to begin with, so I don’t get why I got lectured like that. I get all that (well, most of it).

  • Blade

    Hisako crushes them both 😉

  • disqus_JGr7FxyRat

So glad another versus movie is getting made. Really digging Kayako and Toshio’s look in this one and I’m surprised how seriously they seem to be treating it. Although when it comes down to Kayako and Sadako actually fighting, I don’t really see how they’ll pull it off without going full camp.

    • Fake Emotion

Maybe they can do something like how spirits fight each other in some horror manga and the Fatal Frame games.

    • AphroditeBoy

Both got much more physical and aggressive in their most recent titles. I’m just hoping they don’t bring the grasshopper leg Sadako clones back! Maybe we will find out where Kayako actually takes people when she pulls them through mattresses and mirrors and stuff.

  • DarkBree

It’s nice to see they are going back to basics!!

  • Trisha Tachanawa

    This is actually pretty awesome

  • Gavin Dobbs

    Well… that’s a threesome made in hell.

  • Andrew Sheridan

We’re going to get some extreme hair pulling.

    • bernardg

CATFIGHT! I’ll bring the popcorn and beers.

  • wehoaks

    Look RIDIC.

    So into this.

  • Hash-Slinging Slasher

You know you fucked up when you watch The Ring tape in The Grudge house.

    • Khy

      Oh yes!

    • Hahaha! I’m cracking up

  • pablitonizer

Oh boy… this is so Lake Placid vs Anaconda.. I just can’t! Looking forward to “RINGS” though

  • Chaosbender

problem: love the ringu movies, but I am way too scared by those Grudge-movies… shiver-laughing

    • Cockyxx

LOL same! I love both movies but Grudge scared me so much. I don’t even know why because it’s not that different from The Ring but it’s the first and only movie that fucked me up a bit.

  • Chrissie-Watkins

OMG, this is really happening? YAY!!!

  • AphroditeBoy

I’m just so happy to be alive in a time when this exists. I hope they release it on Netflix or something here in the states.

  • Jimmy Cthulhuhan

I’m a huge fan of both (well, not the reboots/remakes) and I can’t even get mildly excited for this… so very dumb (yet doesn’t look dumb enough to be amusing).

  • Khy

LOL They made this really look intense. I’m ready.

  • Mightygil

I’ll watch it. First time I’ve seen a Ju-on/Grudge since part 3 U.S. and the utter garbage that is The Ring 2 U,S,

  • Nya Taylor

And somewhere, Freddy’s on this cell phone shouting WorldStar.

    LOL XD

    • Trent Mcfeters

Nah hes calling hes agent pissed about not having a freddy vs jason sequal lmfao

  • Lucca Cantisano

This is gonna be so cool!

  • Nahuel Benvenuto

lol, is like the same movie right?

  • Frank Lloyd Jr.

Not a big subtitles fan. Think I’ll just wait for the eventual US remake.

    • Dev

  • JoeInTheBox

…They’re just the villains in the new Ghostbusters movie, right?

    • Vader the White

That would actually be fucking awesome.

    • Evan3

JoeInTheBox – call Hollywood immediately. They can have my money if they do this.

  • ThunderDragoon

Huge fan of Kayako. Can’t wait to see this.

  • Vader the White

I kinda want to watch this just on the sheer level of silliness this concept has.

  • V’ladimir Bowlsworth

  • Dev

Fanboys across the world unite, I guess. Sounds bullshit to me. Ringu was great, The Grudge wasn’t that good though. Crossovers always blow.

  • TH3J4CK4L

Thought it looked bad before, but it looks even worse now. Leave it to the Japanese to murder their franchises with sequels that either get shot in worse format down the line or find themselves subjected to idiotic vs films. Shouldve seen it coming since Shimizu hasn’t been involved at all with the franchise since white ghost & black ghost.

  • Jerico Tan

remember guys, Koji Shiraishi is one of the great notable j-horror directors in Japan. remember his Noroi 2005 film? 😛 I’m expecting something from this guy.

  • Lirabelle

This is one of those moments that is so ridiculous you either walk away from it now, or you just go with it.

…. My popcorn will be ready.

  • Halloween_Vic

I laughed so hard at the little ghost boy his tongue sticking out lol!!!! And did I read that right??? There is a plan on remaking ”The Grudge”? LOL what is going on? Can they use the budget towards new ideas? I mean really?

  • Halloween_Vic

But this does look stupidly fun! And I mean that in the cheesiest way possible lol

  • Evan3

I’ve gone back and forth on this all while reading the article. I remain a passionate fan of The Ring and The Grudge had some decent moments (I prefer Ring to Ringu and Ju-On to Grudge). Obviously, this makes far less sense than Jason v. Freddy, and slightly more than Anaconda vs. Lake Placid, but I hope BD follows this matchup and lets us know who wins.

    • Fake Emotion

I feel it makes more sense that Freddy VS. Jason (also more than Batman v. Superman), and I say this because Japanese Spirits are vengful things that usually died wrongful deaths and feel that others need to be punished and feel their pain, once they have a victim/target set they will stop at nothing to get them, even if another spirit gets in their way, and I would logically assume thats what happened in this movie, both spirits probally ended up with the same target (such poor luck for that person), and now they both want to end their targets life but the other is getting in their way so each spirit decides to take out the other so they can get their target, if I remember correctly stuff like this has been done in other Japanese Horror, where multiple enemy spirits are after one target and go after each other before the target.

      • Evan3

I still hold out hope that Batman v. Superman is a legal drama given the lack of an “s” in “vs.” If that’s the case, Batman v. Superman wins!

  • Evan3

PLEASE(!) Cast Ken Watanabe to get drunk as hell and yell “Let them Fight!”
