Is The Tension Experience Building a Cult of Followers?

Published

on

A few weeks ago we reported on a mysterious website that was launched called “The Tension Experience.”

I’ve been keeping tabs on “Tension” (via reddit) ever since I signed up. Since it appears to be Los Angeles-based for the time being, I’m assuming that’s why I haven’t been led down the rabbit hole the same way many others have.

Once you signed up on their website, you were e-mailed a series of cryptic clues.

If you deciphered these clues, which was damn near impossible, it allegedly led you to a phone number.

Apparently, if you called the phone number, a receptionist picked up from the “OOA Institute” and scheduled an in-person consultation, which is a bit bizarre.

From what I was able to gather, people who cracked the code were given a time, and told to wait until the morning of the event with location details. I guess, once some of these people arrived they were texted with yet another address, sending them on a wild goose chase.

While we were not able to attend the event which took place in Los Angeles this past Friday, a handful of pictures have been posted to their Facebook page that deepens the mystery surrounding “Tension” and promises that this is “only the beginning.”

From what we can decode so far, it’s part ARG, part immersive theater, part haunt.

Since I can’t head down the rabbit hole myself, those of you local should sign up on their website and keep us posted with whatever you are able to find out.

I’ve seen people suggest this could be the world of J.J. Abrams, although I literally have no way of confirming such a claim.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
