‘Ghostbusters’ Trailer: A Colorful Electric Light Show…With Slimer!

Published

on

Sony dropped an ectoplasm bomb this morning with the full trailer for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, featuring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as the title characters.

While there’s not a whole lot of plot details here, Sony pulled back the curtain on quite a bit of footage, which is surprising considering it doesn’t release until July 15, 2016.

What really stands out is the colorful nature of the film, which takes the Proton Stream design from the original 1984 film and builds it around all of the spooks. We get to see Slimer, above, as well as dozens more who litter the streets of New York City.

The initial Ghostbusters films used puppets as their ghosts, while these appear to be heavy CGI; they look really cool in the trailer, but being that they lack the look of physical touch, I worry that it will affect what’s at stake in the film.

For now, I’m impressed with the electric light show; it looks like we’re going to be in for a belated Fourth of July fireworks display!

Since the trailer doesn’t touch on plot, early reports indicate that dead criminals from all eras of New York’s underbelly past have returned to roost among the living; pilgrims, old-timey sailors, Revolutionary War spirits, and even a couple of zoot-suited gangsters are ready to take on four formidable female busters looking to rid the city of its phantasmic filth.

This happens courtesy of “SNL” vet Neil Casey, who is allegedly the main Ghostbusters villain. He is rumored to play the ghost of a murderer (sort of like Wes Craven’s Shocker, actually) who resurrects the above ghost army based on historical characters.

Director Paul Feig has filmed cameos (in new roles) for many of the original Ghostbusters cast, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and even Sigourney Weaver.

Andy Garcia, Michael Kenneth Williams, Matt Walsh and Pat Kiernan also star alongside Chris Hemsworth.

Williams has a scene with Slimer, he recently told reporters.

Matilda Firth Joins the Cast of Director Leigh Whannell’s ‘Wolf Man’ Movie

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
