‘Day of the Dead’ Re-remake Gets a New Director

maxresdefault

One of the worst remakes of all time is Steve Miner’s 2008 take on George A. Romero’s seminal Day of the Dead.

Now, Nu Image/Millennium are taking another stab at it, but it sounds like they’re trying something a bit new.

The Corpse of Anna Fritz‘s Hèctor Hernández Vicens is directing what’s described as a post-apocalyptic tale that, “Follows a former medical student tormented by a dark figure from her past, who happens to be a half-human, half-zombie hell-bent on destroying her.

Campbell Grobman Films produces, coming off of the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, Leatherface, with Jeff Rice.

Nu Image holds worldwide rights excluding the Middle East.

Mark Tonderai (The House at the End Of The Street) was attached back in 2013. The synopsis back then added this to the story: “Years after the zombie plague has wiped out most of Earth’s population, a group of scientists and survivors attempt to find a cure, and instead open Pandora’s box.” It’s unclear if this has been rewritten to align more with Vicens’s vision.

Casting is currently underway, we’re told.

How it this a remake? The plot appears to have no similarities to the original. At least Miner tried. Failed, but tried.

It’s like having a “Groundhog Day” remake that follows a team of paranormal researchers looking for Bigfoot on Groundhog Day.

  • Winnipeg Marijuana

So this will be the second worst remake sort of not really sequel of all time?

It’s going to have to struggle to reach the mighty heights of ROTLD 4/5

    WMM

  • Kaijudude

    I wouldn’t exactly call ’08’s the worst , but it wasn’t great

    • Saturn

It wasn’t as bad as Day Of The Dead 2 : Contagium.
Actually, now I think of it, it was worse!

      • Kaijudude

Oh yeah , as much as i hate to say it that was an abortion. I feel sorry for the actors and director that got swept up in that sewage. You could tell most of them were trying their best.

  • Shane da Lucky

What? It’s not a remake, it’s just exploiting ‘the brand’ sounds shit, half zombie, half human… Nup.

The original was awesome, particularly gruesome and disturbing.

    • Rohan Sorensen

Yeah, dafuq is this? It sounds like a half-assed version of Anerican Werewolf in London, except with no werewolves, and doesn’t take place in London, I couldn’t think of anything else.

      • Saturn

        An American In America?

  • Rob

    Ugh….just Ugh.

  • disqus_uPh3WDxbQy

The original wasn’t loved for the longest time. It’s only recently that people even acknowledge Day of the Dead as being remotely good. I’m all for another take on a flawed film to begin with.

    • Saturn

      Only recently?
I do remember when it was first released there were those who disliked it, that it was a letdown compared to Dawn, as it was so dark.
But I also remember during the 1990’s it was already being held up as a classic.

  • Adam Clifton

Half-human, half-zombie? So is he dead from the neck down or neck up? Sounds stupid. If they really want to remake Day Of The Dead, they should do it the way George Romero wanted to do it originally. Make it a worldwide epic thing

    • Javi Simon

I’ve always wanted to see the series continue from “Land of the Dead,” which I thought was awesome. I loved the idea of zombies beginning to “evolve.” Walking out of that theater as a kid, I was like next one is going to be insane. Like “World of the Dead” or something … Never got it lol. Apparently, something like that went into a recent comic series. But I never looked into it.

      • Saturn

Well you will be pleased to hear that Empire Of The Dead (the comic) is coming to a tv near you soon.

        • Javi Simon

That would be cool. Hope it’s done well.

      • Adam Clifton

Land Of The Dead was awesome. It is a shame Romero didn’t continue it instead of going Diary Of The Dead and the stupid sequel to that

        • Saturn

Really strange that, like Day, years later people are saying “Land was awesome!” when back when it was released it was roundly panned.

I always defended the movie and said that it would find it’s audience – and it seems to have done so. Unlike Survival Of The Dead which was a piece of shit.
Although I would like to see Romero give us at least one more “classic” Dead movie (Land was fine, but not a classic) before he leaves us.

Is it too much to ask for Twilight Of The Dead?

          • Adam Clifton

Yeah, I always liked Land Of The Dead. To me it’s part of the Dead series and I’d love to see Twilight Of The Dead. Not sure why Romero doesn’t like The Walking Dead though

          • Saturn

TBH the only “Dead” movie I disliked was Survival – although, controversially, I always found Night to be a little over-rated.
Dawn (along with ROTLD and Zombi 2) is the daddy of zombie movies.

          • Creepshow

If you haven’t already seen Zombie 3 yet…DO NOT. It is utter trash!

          • Saturn

            I LOVE Zombi 3!
Who can resist a movie with zombie fridge scenes?

          • Adam Clifton

I always wonder why the undead zombie girl would stab her mother to death with a trowel. Why? It doesn’t mesh with the rest of the mythology

          • Saturn

That is exactly the scene I point to when discussing Romero’s zombie movies with other people when they complain about Big Daddy (and the others) in Land Of The Dead using tools and weapons, and claiming that it’s something new. I have to remind them of the trowel scene in Night, alongside the graveyard zombie using a rock to try and break into Barbara’s car.
I also remind them that “running” zombies are not a new thing, that graveyard zombie also at one point seems to be running (not like Bolt, but not just staggering along) after Barbara after she crashes the car, and of course the brief scene of the 2 little kids running at Peter.

    • Creepshow

I agree with you about Day of the Dead. Romero originally wanted it to take place outside. With humans training zombies for combat and stuff. But budget restraints made him change to the under ground scenario. I was hoping that Land of the Dead was gonna be something along the lines of what he wanted to do with Day originally. It wasn’t unfortunately, and that left me a somewhat disappointed.

      • Adam Clifton

Yeah, but it was still better than Survival Of The Dead

      • Saturn

Okay, Land did have scenes of zombies fighting humans in cages, so the combat thing was there. Or do you mean using them as a military force, like ROTLD 3 and 4(?) seemed to be doing?

        • Creepshow

Picture what they were trying to do with Bub, but on a much broader scale.

  • J Jett

i can’t lie, i actually like (and own on DVD!) Miner’s DAY remake! LOL. it’s most definitely a guilty pleasure but yeah, i like that movie. 🙂

    • Saturn

You are indeed GUILTY! Of bad taste!

      • J Jett

Saturn, you silly boy you. 🙂

        • Saturn

          😉

  • marklola12 .

    this sounds shit as fuck

    • gabriel

      Troll much?

  • diapers

The Miner installment wasn’t so bad IMO opinion, I liked it well enough for a second viewing. Its impossible to tell based on 2 or 3 sentence plot, but this sounds interesting. But why call it yet another remake, unless its very very similar? Why not a stand alone post apocalyptic flick?

  • Daniel Anderson

There were small elements of miners version that were okay, but it wasn’t day of the dead.

  • Alanmac

Speaking of the Leatherface prequel, STILL no word on a trailer or even a teaser?

    • Saturn

      ALWAYS a good sign!

  • zombie84_41

Oh so a more horror version of Warm Bodies LOL.

  • REC03

the 2008 “remake” was so bad/cheesy that it was good tbh.

  • SUSAN HARTWOOD

    Sounds like another tired remake.

  • Gobshite

So, after one atrocious attempt at a so called remake, they go ahead and try it again, this time with something that sounds even f*cking worse than the 2008 attempt? I don’t get it. Seriously, is Hollywood intentionally trolling by destroying every single last classic that was ever made? It’s beyond a joke.
