Classic ‘Doom’ Gets Modern Arsenal in New Mod

Published

on

The shooter genre has evolved considerably since the original Doom took it mainstream back in 1993. Some of the new stuff that games developers have come up with since then can be seen in the series reboot that released earlier this month, but what’s neat about this latest entry is in how genuinely old school it feels, specifically in regards to its arsenal of weapons.

More than two decades separate the two games, but the reboot sticks close enough to the fluid and fast-paced combat that continues to be such an important part of the classic Doom experience that you could probably take the weapons out of the 2016 game, drop them in the 1993 original, and barely notice a difference.

Did I say probably? I meant absolutely, and ZDoom modder DBThanatos is already working on something that does this very thing. Come have a look.

The DOOM for DooM mod is unfinished, with alternate firing modes missing for every weapon other than the pump shotgun and pistol. DBThanatos is working to implement the rest, as well as add even more gore. “I will indeed add extra gore,” he writes on the ZDoom forums, “Not [Brutal Doom] levels of gore, but enough to satisfy my needs.”

And here’s the obligatory reminder that my Doom review is something that continues to exist exclusively for your reading pleasure. I live to serve you.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
