A Movie Titled ‘Leatherface’ Was Just Released But Don’t Be Fooled

Published

on

While we wait for Leatherface, a knockoff Leatherface has arrived.

Billed as a prequel to the original film, Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s Leatherface is set to introduce us to a teenage Leatherface… we just have no idea when to actually expect it. The film has most definitely already been shot, but it’s been quite a while since we’ve heard a peep about it. We haven’t seen a trailer. There isn’t a release date. And we’re starting to get worried.

In the meantime, a new horror film titled Leatherface just hit DVD over in the UK this week, and we wanted to make sure you don’t get confused. The film, directed by Rene Perez, just got a release from Lightning Pictures that would certainly lead you to believe it’s connected to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. The image on the front cover is of a killer wielding a chainsaw and wearing a mask that appears to be made of stitched together human flesh, and the tagline notes that “the legend lives on.” The legend of TCM‘s Leatherface, huh? Well, not exactly.

In the knockoff film:

Four wannabe actors take part in a horrifying reality show in which a serial killer stalks them in a remote cabin and their reactions are filmed for TV. The survivor of the week is promised $1 million and the starring role in their very own horror film. The only problem is the role of the killer is being played by a maniacal murderer who has been let out of an insane asylum to continue his reign of terror…

So what’s the deal? How is this even allowed? Doing a little research, it looks like the film’s original title was Playing with Dolls: Bloodlust, which it was released under here in the states last year. It’s a sequel to Perez’s own Playing with Dolls, released in 2015. It seems Lighting Pictures has resorted to devious tactics to sell copies, trying to fool customers into thinking that the film is the Leatherface we’ve all been waiting for. But don’t take the bait. It most definitely is not.

Now, will the real Leatherface please stand up?!
