Original ‘The Evil Dead’ and Remake Getting Incredible Blu-ray Releases in Japan

Published

Get ready to double dip… again.

No horror franchise has been re-released on home video more times than The Evil Dead, which has been given so many different VHS, DVD and Blu-ray releases here in the States alone that I can’t even keep track anymore. Hell, in my own collection you’ll find a handful of those releases, as I admit to being lured in by things like new features, new artwork, and new packaging.

Speaking of new packaging, oh boy did Japan just up the bar.

On July 26th, both Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead and Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead will be getting brand spankin’ new Blu-ray releases over in Japan, and no expense was spared to ensure that they’re must-own releases… even if you already own both films several times over. It’s the packaging that makes these releases special, with each film housed inside a deluxe edition collectible box.

The original film’s packaging recreates the iconic poster art, while the remake’s box recreates the image of a Deadite emerging from the infamous cabin’s cellar door.

Also worth noting that the remake’s Blu-ray disc boasts the Unrated Cut of the film, which has to date not been released on home video in the states – though you can digitally rent it.

Hat tip to Basement of Ghoulish Decadence for the heads up.

When best friends Glen (Stephen Dorff) and Terry (Louis Tripp) stumble across a mysterious crystalline rock in Glen’s backyard, they quickly dig up the newly sodden lawn searching for more precious stones. Instead, they unearth The Gate — an underground chamber of terrifying demonic evil. The teenagers soon understand what evil they’ve released as they are overcome with an assortment of horrific experiences. With fiendish followers invading suburbia, it’s now up to the kids to discover the secret that can lock The Gate forever . . . if it’s not too late.
