Kurt Russell Wanted to Bring ’80s Action Characters Together for Epic Mashup Movie

What’s the coolest movie NEVER made? We now have the answer.

Ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s release, Kurt Russell has been doing the interview rounds and spreading his particular brand of cool all across the world in the process. But one of those interviews was way cooler than the others. During a press junket for the Marvel sequel, FOX 5 DC got something out of Russell that has, to our knowledge, never before been revealed.

As Russell explained, he once pitched a movie years ago that would’ve pre-dated the era of the cinematic universe by bringing some our favorite characters together for one epic mashup!

He told the outlet:

Years ago I did think that it would be – and nobody would listen to me – I thought it’d be great to sort of take a bunch of the characters – guys like Bruce Willis and Stallone and Schwarzenegger and whatever. They all had one best character that I thought would be interesting in the action world. I thought it’d be fun to put those guys together. That would’ve been a realistic version of what Marvel did, but it was like talking to a wall. It was a little ahead of its time, I guess. I thought it would’ve been cool. And let them be the characters that they are.

Would Russell himself have starred? He added:

My thing about that was, if I was going to be Snake [Plissken] in that, I’m going to have to produce the movie. The only thing Snake’s gonna do is walk in, look at ’em… and leave.

A badass idea way too far ahead of its time, that’s for sure. Sigh. If only.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
