Freddy Krueger Appears in Epic ‘Ready Player One’ Trailer! #SDCC

Holy. Shit. We are so ready.

Steven Spielberg just unleashed an incredible blast of nostalgia at Comic-Con, unveiling the hotly-anticipated trailer for his Ready Player One. Not only does Freddy Krueger make a brief appearance (yes, Freddy in a Spielberg film!), but so too does the Back to the Future DeLorean and even The Iron Giant!

Nostalgic reminders aside… this looks AMAZING.

In the book, written by Ernest Cline…

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines–puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win–and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.”

The cast includes Tye Sheridan, T.J. Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, Hannah John-Kamen, Olivia Cooke and Ralph Ineson.

Look for it on March 30, 2018.

I think all of this 80s nostalgia is going to kill us one day, like ever-hardening arteries on a societal level.

    • Just like how all that 50’s nostalgia killed everyone..

      • Brando

        Exactly.

  • syntaxterror

I still don’t get all the praise for this book. It relies completely on 80s nostalgic filler to hold it up and, if you take that away, the story is pretty flat

    • The story works. Fantasy with science fiction. A little Willy Wonka, a little Logan’s run. The nostalgia is for sure there, but only if that’s how it works for you. Plenty of people enjoyed this book that don’t have that nostalgia. It’s like Roger Rabbit.

      • syntaxterror

Roger Rabbit had a solid story that didn’t rely on nostalgic fanfare to make it work. Was the fanfare there? Absolutely. Did the story get brushed aside because the nostalgia was too busy winking at the audience? Nope, not at all

        • How is RP1 too busy winking? All the nostalgic aspects felt pretty organic. It’s not like it’s The Goldbergs.

    • biohazardextreme

How is that any different from Star Wars, or plenty of other iconic franchises that rely on their visual themes? A story about 80’s nostalgia hits the spot, I’d say.

      • syntaxterror

How does Star Wars rely on 80s nostalgia? Ready Player One isn’t about 80s nostalgia but it relies on the reader thinking things like “Hey… Freddy Krueger! I know that character! Wow… Pac-Man! I played that game!” instead of thinking about character developments, story arcs, and whatnot. One can certainly introduce an 80s theme as long as the story holds up despite it not because of it

Also let me clarify that I have indeed read the book and I’m not judging this movie based on this simple trailer only

        • biohazardextreme

I’m not saying Star Wars relies on 80s nostalgia, I just mean it as an analogy. Star Wars relies on spaceship battles, light sabers, and basically on the world (or galaxy) that George Lucas has established to enhance what’s otherwise a very simplistic and unremarkable story. But because of that world building, the way the story is told is still very captivating. In Ready Player One’s case, it’s the same thing, it’s about the world building and captivating the imagination through the setting that the reader (or viewer in the movie’s case) is placed into. If the 80’s nostalgia filled setting doesn’t captivate you, well, nothing can be done I suppose. Not everyone likes Star Wars either.

          • syntaxterror

The good* Star Wars movies don’t rely solely on spaceship battles, light sabers, etc. to drive the story. I’m not saying I’m not captivated by any of that either and I surely can be captivated by any nostalgic themed story as long as there is a strong or even a semi-decent story to be told. Again, as someone who has read the book, I feel that there is not a decent story being told and the author himself relied on the readers sense of nostalgia to sell his ideas instead of bringing forth any real semblance of a well told story.

Let me just say that it’s not the end of the world for me. I probably won’t give away my hard earned cash to watch this at all and I hope I’m actually proven wrong in the screen adaptation of what I hold to believe is a completely lackluster and overly praised novel.

*good meaning NOT the prequels and one or two others (fight amongst yourselves)

    • NixEclips

It’s a good thing that seems to be the whole whole point, then.

  • This is amazing and better than any extended universe!

  • Dave Galloway

Looks horrendous. Let’s just throw a whole bunch of CGI up on the screen again, and see it people are dumb enough to pay.

    • Jonathan Larsson

It’s set in a virtual world. Doesn’t it make sense to give it a CGI-look?

      • llcc1103

why does VR have to translate into CGI? I.E the Matrix, Original Tron, Westworld

        • Jonathan Larsson

The Matrix was supposed to be a realistic illusion, the original Tron was groundbreaking but still limited by it’s time, and Westworld is a theme park with androids. This is apparently supposed to represent a virtual reality that is fully aware of the fact that it is a game, not unlike Summer Wars or The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest.

          • llcc1103

Yea but if this is the future wouldnt advancements in gaming be more realistic? Some games look better than this cgi..

          • Jonathan Larsson

            Which ones?

  • Christopher Nickerson

    Lost me at TJ Miller

  • jasonlives1986

That looks like a fantastic concept that died at the realization of the project.

    Looks so bad

  • disqus_uqr3Boh0Wp

Wow I can’t wait to see this.

  • disqus_uqr3Boh0Wp

I hope he has snuck in either Jason or Michael.

  • Jonathan Larsson

Overall, these next few years feel like good crossover years. First Kingdom Hearts 3, then Wreck-It Ralph 2, this, eventually Godzilla vs King Kong and then the Dark Universe equivalent of The Avengers (unless they try to reboot again for some fucking reason).

This was a pretty good trailer. It gives the viewer a peek of a unique world as well some neat and quite frankly unexpected cameos, without giving out the full details of the story. The movie seems really CGI-heavy, but considering that it seems to be mainly set in a virtual world, it makes sense.

  • Sykes

I’m not down with Freddy having gloves on both hands, but whatever.

I’m not that excited about seeing the film, but I do like the idea of a race between different movie vehicles. Doc’s DeLorean vs Christine vs Kaneda’s bike vs who knows what else…that’s pretty cool.

    • Kristoffer Groves

They probably had to alter him for copyright reasons

      • Sykes

That seems unlikely, seeing as Freddy is currently owned by Warners…the company who made Ready Player One.

  • Munchie

    Looks loud, obnoxious and stupid.

    SIGN ME UP!!!!

  • Khy

Ew, looks so fucking Hetero Male.

    • Christopher Corvino

      and whats wrong with that?

    • Weresmurf

      Wow, so heterophobic of you.

    • Anticulture

Wow, there’s so much wrong with the thought process that resulted in that comment.

    • You make me so proud sometimes.

      • Khy

        LOL I try

    • Kristoffer Groves

Oh, those guys who make up the largest filmgoing demographic? Screw em.

      • Christopher Corvino

fortunately this person is most likely being sarcastic or just a troll. I doupt feminazi types visit these sites.

      • Khy

        Yup. Fuck those breeders.

  • J Jett

    holy crap! this looks awesome!

  • David

Did you catch Stephen King’s Christine, The A-Team Van, Mad Max’s V8 Intercepter & FUCKING Bigfoot in the raceway? I sure DID!!!! This movie should had been called Fan Service: Ultimate Edition.

  • J Jett

i’m surprised so many here are thinking this looks bad. oh well, to each his/her own i guess.

    • MeeGhoulz

There are actual video games that looks better than this. And some few even have better plots.

  • Matheus Martins

Its a big blockbuster about virtual video game style reality with some random movie/comic/video game characters/objects here and there….

So… why are people excited again? ‘-‘

Thats one of the most useless, lazy cash-in premises i ever heard.

WTF happened to Spielberg? did they MK-Ultra his ass into making this shit?

    • Matheus Martins

BTW: What a fantastic Mortal Kombat X model Freddy Krueger 2 second cameo there…..

Oh i cant wait to watch this! its going to be DAH BEST MOVIE EVAHH HUR DUR!!!

      • Kristoffer Groves

        Mortal Kombat 9

    • NixEclips

Did you read the book? Not me, but it sounds interesting.

      • NixEclips

Hell, I haven’t even watched the trailer up there.

    • WOLF

It’s a well reviewed book by critics and many people love it. There’s a lot more going on than what the trailer shows.

    • MeeGhoulz

Spielberg usually goes where the money is. The plot will most likely offer obvious social commentary so it’s not seen as a simple special effects flick…So,it’s Spielberg for millenials. I’m not buying it.

  • Anticulture

Oh come on, no mention at all that he’s wearing one too many gloves? Don’t let me down, B-D.

    • Mark

exactly its something any true horror fan would have spotted right away

    • ReaperMike83

BD let’s everyone down all the time, especially Brad Miska. He’s a shill, not a true horror fan.

    • John Squires

I wrote this article. I of course noticed Freddy has two gloves on. And I really don’t care. It’s Krueger in a Spielberg movie and I’m not nitpicking something that cool.

      • Mark

hardly nitpicking your a fucking horror movie website for god sake

        • Tetra-Gramaton-Cleric

It should read “you’re”, contraction for “you are”, since we’re nitpicking. 🙂

  • Kristoffer Groves

A live action version of Parker & Stone’s Imagination Land. Super sweet 😀

  • KennyThaKilla

Even though it was nice to see remake Freddy get blown to smithereens, I have zero interest in this.

  • Mark

why does he have claws on both hands

    • Scott Chambers

      Because its Scary Terry!

    • AdamX

Mortal Kombat Freddy, he took no chances vs Shao Khan and Scorpion.

      • marklola12 .

Errm but I thought this movie was referencing 80s stuff, you can not reference a revamped character from a recent game when it’s not actually the 80s version

        • AdamX

I doubt Speilsy keeps track of video games, he just saw Freddy from the 80’s in a game and tossed him in as is.

I’m sure a more faithful to the time period blue and purple Jason will be included.

  • Gray Michael

I really liked to book. Not sure if it can translate to the big screen. Guess I’ll have to wait and see.

  • El_Fez

    Wow, that looks terrible.

  • American Atheist

Freddy didn’t seem to be imposing at all. It would’ve been a short franchise if Freddy was that easy to kill.

    • Tetra-Gramaton-Cleric

That was probably somebody using Freddy’s likeness as an avatar within the game.

      Not the “real” Freddy. 🙂

  • DubKing X1

Don’t forget Duke Nukem next to Freddy.

  • Werewolf

Can you say “CGI MEGA SPAM”?

    I thought you could.

  • Sail As Islands Belong On Trip

    This looks like ham-fisted garbage.

  • Travis_Bickle

Member Back to the Future?? Member?? Member How Awesome The 80’s were?? Member?

    • MYKEE WATTZ

      Ooh yeah I member

    • AdamX

Local radio won’t let me forget!

  • Daniel Anderson

Multi-tiered trailer parks…the nail on the head with gaming in general…speilbergs still got some left in him. Its gonna be like sucker punch 2017.

  • Jay Brezzy

Oh man….Here come the BD ” I know more about horror than this writer, this movie’s going to blow, so here’s why this site sucks and he/she is a shit writer ” comments lmao.

    • Mark

Lol what is the point of your post all your doing is stating what people have already written way before you posted your comment lol

  • IWC-3PO

Is this a live-action remake of South Park’s Imaginationland?

  • CGI overkill :/

    • Tetra-Gramaton-Cleric

Given the nature of the novel and its central premise, that really isn’t avoidable.

  • WOW so many negative grumpy critics quick to bitch about the movie learn to enjoy things you grumpy gills

  • Colin Christian

Can’t wait!! Spielberg is an American Icon, genius filmmaker.

  • Kev Weldon

    Bazinga: The Movie.

Anybody notice Duke Nukem just made his very first Cinematic debut?

  • Steven Spielberg? His first science fiction movie in 13 years? Iron Giant? Lara Croft and Mad Max’s Interceptors? DeLorean and Akira’s bike? Duke Nukem and Freddy Krueger in one frame? I almost had a heart attack.
