An Epic New War Begins in Action Packed ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Trailer

“The war we thought we finished… is just beginning.”

The apocalypse may have been cancelled back in 2013, but a whole new breed of bigger, badder and more evolved monsters are ready to unleash Hell in Steven S. DeKnight’s Pacific Rim Uprising. Thankfully, a new generation of bigger, badder Jaegers stand in their way.

Epic entertainment is highlighted in the official trailer, straight out of NYCC!

Uprising is set 10 years after the first film.

In the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s film, arriving March 23, 2018

“The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious‘ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.”

Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Jing Tian, Levi Meaden, and Adria Arjona also star.

Holy smokes, Charlie Day cleans up something fierce! I have been and still am excited for this movie.

That group shot near the end where it goes from Jaeger to Jaeger is…. not good. Same with the group shot of them running. It removes the sense of scale from the last film. Like, in the first one, the action was barely contained in the screen and made these things feel huge. Seeing them all together in their giant robot anime poses makes me feel like I’m playing a video game and there’s no threat. I hope (imagine?) those glamour shots were asked for specifically to ham it up for the trailers.

  • pablitonizer

It looks pretty generic, a mix between Power Rangers and Tranformers. Obviously aiming for a teen audience…I think it lost the touch and feeling of the original idea

    • J Jett

LOL! i too said it looks like TRANSFORMERS and POWER RANGERS! 🙂
      i agree 100%.

    • Youri Gavrilov

Teens save the world. Obviously – aimong for people over 40 🙂

  • sliceanddice

    I’ll take it!

  • Youri Gavrilov

Why John Boyega? He looks like a thug…

    • Saturn

You should check out the movies ATTACK THE BLOCK which he starred in – fantastic movie.

      • Wil McMullen

So that’s where I know dude from… I haven’t seen it in years and actually enjoyed that movie

        • Saturn

It’s a good movie, which I’d like to see a sequel, but whether or not John would have time to reprise his role? Not sure, as I reckon he’s going to go on and be a big star in years to come.
I’d like to see him come back for it….

        • Saturn

Mate, it’s time to revisit it.
One of the best British horror/sci-fi (well, in general) movies of recent years.

          • chronikheckler

Worth a re-visit but remember to activate your Closed-Caption option. The thick accents make it mostly incomprehensible without the captions.

          • Saturn

If you’re a Brit – no big deal.
But y’all in the States? Yeah, I kinda get it.
            Speak English boys!

(of course I jest – are the accents really that understandable?)

      • J Jett

Saturn, i agree 100%. ATTACK is an awesome movie and Boyega was great in it.

        • Youri Gavrilov

He was great in it – cause he was fitting for it. Not only an actor should be good (witch is the case with Biyega) he has to fit within the genre, the character and the mood his project generates.
He doesn’t seem to fit here…

          • Travis_Bickle

            *Which

    • Mr. Dry

      Because he’s a really good actor (?

      • Youri Gavrilov

But he doesn’t really fit here.

        • Mr. Dry

What do you need to fit in Pacific Rim anyways?

    • PetCactus

      Eat shit.

    • Travis_Bickle

      Racist

      • Youri Gavrilov

You are. If you think I compared him with thugs because of his nigerian blood. I compared him because of his actual face and line delivery.

        • Travis_Bickle

          Yeah….it’s racist

          • Youri Gavrilov

            Nope.

          • Travis_Bickle

Ok…walk up to a black person and tell them they sound like a thug…and watch there reaction….then remind me how it’s not racist.

          • REC03

Thank you. This guy is a tool.

    • Frank Gambino

      He does??

      • Youri Gavrilov

Look at his eyes and eyebrows. And his jawline. And his delivery of the “speech” in the trailer. Can’t you feel it?

        • Frank Gambino

          No. I can’t feel it.

    • REC03

Are you serious with this comment right now? Dear lord…

  • Saturn

I enjoyed the first movie quite a bit – it wasn’t the greatest thing Del Toro ever did, but it was fun – so I’m looking forward to the sequel.
I wonder if it will lead to the eventual Pacific Rim/Godzilla/King Kong cross-over event that was being considered a few years back?

    • Wil McMullen

Oh man! That would be Damn epic, but I highly doubt that will be happening in any of the nearest futures. I would be onboard for sure.

      • Saturn

Will, I reckon it will count on how well the new PR movie does – if it’s at least reasonably successful then I reckon there could well be a chance for a cross-over movie.
If done well (and obviously using the whole multi-verse angle) it could be something pretty special.

    • Youri Gavrilov

Doubt that… unless “Universal” and “WB” will find some kind of middle ground.

    • Jarle Solbakken Fremstad

If it does I am hoping that they’ll manage to keep it secret for as long as they can, but knowing how marketing is these days it’ll be all over every teaser and trailer from the get go.

  • Mr. Dry

Wait. Is it robots against robots this time? I mean I saw some kaijus over there but the jaeger/jaeger thing seems to be the center of the story. I’m not sure about how good is that. We don’t need more Transformers.

    • Christopher Nickerson

The original storyline supposably was that with no more Kaiju humans started using Jaegers for war on each other, and then kaiju reappear. Del Toro mentioned this back when he was still going to direct and Charlie Hunan was going to return. Not sure what changed with the rewrites, but up until this trailer all mentions of a human war fought with Jaeger had been dropped. I am wondering if it is possible shots from a training simulator in the movie as the one literally looked like Gypsy vs Gypsy

      • Mr. Dry

I didn’t know any of that, kinda makes sense now that you bring it up, however, I’m still not sure about the Jaeger vs. Jeager thing.

        • Christopher Nickerson

Yeah, Del Toro only briefly mentioned it, then all the talk of budget cuts started, then shortly after he left as director. Looking at the cast list (which on the internet doesn’t mean much), there are characters called Kaiju Worshippers. They could possibly be using the Gipsy (just rewatched the first and noticed the spelling) doppelganger to help the Kaiju. I just hope this isn’t the “Gipsy Avenger Show” and that we get to see the other Jaegers in action and maybe some even survive.

          • Mr. Dry

Yeah. What I liked the least from the first one was the little time invested on the various Jaegers aside from the Gipsy. Still, I’m afraid they Transformerize the shit out of this movie.

  • Jada Maes

Looks better than I expected, and Boyega IS the poor man’s Idris Elba. I’m down.

  • The Dark One

Other than the cgi looking kinda shitty on the Jaegers in my opinion it looks like it’ll be fun.

  • le4therfac3

this looks abysmal. they’re turning it into transformers.

    • CalUni

It looks sooo bad. Not a single character to cling on to and very generic fight scenes that like you say look a little too close to Transformers (another awful franchise). Boyega looks smug as hell in this.

      • Christopher Nickerson

In defense of Boyes looking smug in this, remember he is supposed to be the son of Idris Elba’s character who also came across as smug. Like father like son perhaps

    • J Jett

le4therfac3, YES! i said the same thing that this new movie really looks more like a TRANSFORMERS movie and hardly anything like the first PACIFIC RIM film.

    • Youri Gavrilov

      I wonder, why $)

  • madchilli

Oh dear!…. I’m sure the under 12s will like it. I’m surprised the studio didn’t ask for their money back!

  • WindowsIsDead

    I’m on for the Kaiju

  • Chance LeBoeuf

I love the first film. I could even argue how it’s smarter than many people give it credit for as Del Toro is a talented auteur who knew exactly how to shape the movie Pacific Rim was. It was a film more memorable than it had any right to be. And while this movie could probably still be fun, the essence that made the first one so memorable seems to be lost.

    • chronikheckler

Del Toro never hid the intention that the first Pacific Rim was his own personal love-letter to the giant-monster genre. And it showed. This initial trailer however unfortunately displays a cold, calculated and intentional effort to mimic the style of Transformers and/or Power-Rangers. Not a very promising first impression I’m sad to say. 🙁

  • Christopher Nickerson

The Jaegers seem too fast. In the original they were big and slow (which is what they would be like due to gravity). In the trailer for this one they are running (4 Jaeger running at once would probably cause a small earthquake, remember how much one shook the ground in the original), doing spin kicks, and anime samurai dodges. I will definitely see this, but the lack of Del Toro is apparent.

    • chronikheckler

You hit it on the head Christopher. The sense of scale (which was so meticulously rendered in the first one) appears to be virtually non-existent in this sequel. (Blame it on the lower budget perhaps???) Nevertheless, the Jaegers are now slimmer and more agile and nearly acrobatic in action. The illusion of massive, awe-inspiring and incredibly heavy war-machines is completely absent from this footage. From the way these new Jaegers look and act and move, the Power-Rangers comparison is sadly appropriate. As of right now, my very first impression is one of disappointment. 🙁

      • Youri Gavrilov

And I got exsactly what I expected. Since Del Toro is replaced by a TV-show director (who lacks vision, but crafty enough to replicate his predecessors) it’s obvious that “Pacific Rim 2” is a studio film through and through.

Also – what’s up with this ugly chant that goes over the original music?

  • J Jett

i very much liked the first film and i especially loved the overall look/cinematography/coloring/lighting from the film. i was kind of looking forward to this new movie UNTIL i just watched the trailer. is it just me imagining it or does the movie look very very cheap/flat compared to the first film. the Kaijus in the first film looked fucking amazing (in design and in coloring/fx/lighting) yet in this new film they look almost like they belong in Power Rangers type of movie. they do not look scary/freaky at all to me for some reason. also (again, maybe i’m imagining it) this new film looks like TRANSFORMERS PART 26 (or whatever) whereas the first film never felt in any way like a Transformers movie.

    • Youri Gavrilov

That’s what happens when the visionary auteur is replaced with a bland hired hand

  • Travis_Bickle

Oh Wow man, I didn’t know they made another Power Rangers movie!!

    • Youri Gavrilov

Teens save the world. Totally dumb but never gets old 😉

      • Travis_Bickle

        Yes it does

  • Creepshow

Rather than paying full price to get kicked in the nads, I’ll do it for half price.

  • Maelwolf

Trailer looks awesome! I’m actually getting pumped that the sequel will be as fun as the original. Can’t wait, hope I’m not disappointed, but I definitely am happy with what I’ve seen so far.

  • Geno1987

Man, that was some pretty awful music. Fucking rap, really?

    • Grither 57

      Yeah, f**k that music!

  • I don’t see any kind of hype for this movie

    • Youri Gavrilov

Cause it’s obviously gonna be worse 😉

  • dsxy

The first, although bad, was alot of fun and was looking forward to the sequal….. this lookd atrocious though – who the hell picked that shitty music?

  • HeteroFriendly

    Junk.

    Surely better then transformers,
but thats only as good as a nicer hot poker shoved through your temple.

  • garry stirrup

I loved the first. One of my fav cinema movies ever. I even got a Cherno Alpha insignia tattoo. I mean I love the first.
though looks like absolute rubbish. Not a single thing looks good. Stupid teeny cast. AWFUL music. Too bright. Looks plastic. Beyond disappointed. I had such high hopes .

  • Patrick Curley

IMAX is a no-brainer for this one. Can’t wait.

  • Rohan

Too anime-like. The robots and monsters look small. They are too fast, and seem to be doing ninja moves. In the original they were big and lumbering, not able to dodge much because of how big and slow they were. These just seem like, idk, power rangers or some shit.

    • Mike Messina

The technology has advanced between the first attacks and the new second wave of attacks so they can move faster and do more cool stuff to kick monster ass

      • Rohan

I get it, but it’s just, too fluid. The scale of the monsters and robots are what made Pacific Rim so great. They felt real. This just looks too animated.

  • Mike Messina

    That music sucked
