‘Metro Exodus’ Delayed to 2019, ‘Darksiders 3’ to Follow Suit

Fans of the Metro series will have to wait until next year to get their paws on the upcoming third installment of the series. In fact, several of THQ Nordic’s titles have received a release date push, including Darksiders 3.

In a press release by THQ Nordic that focuses on sales and upcoming games from Koch Media, which THQ Nordic acquired last year (along with Koch’s video game publishing arm, Deep Silver), Metro Exodus has now had its release date pushed to Q1 2019. Furthermore, Deep Silver’s “next key releases”, the action-RPG Biomutant and Darksiders 3, “are still under evaluation for setting a release date”. Translation: Potential release date shuffling. This all kind of makes sense, given that Darksiders 3 will be skipping E3 this year.

Metro Exodus was announced during E3 2017 with a trailer that showed series protagonist Artyom squaring off against a mutated rat beast. A follow-up trailer was released during The Video game Awards this past December. The series is based off of a series of novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, where Earth has been devastated by nuclear war. The first game, Metro 2033, was released back in 2010. The sequel, Metro: Last Light, was released back in 2013.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
