Review: “X-Files Season 10” # 12

Published

Joe Harris treads a lot of familiar ground with this issue of “The X-Files Season 10” but nothing feels quite the same. The brilliance of the series’ huge legacy is that it can toy with our expectations. Pilgrims part two makes you remember certain fears, and just when you think you know what to expect it hits you over the head with something different.

I’m starting to see the signs of Joe Harris toying with us. They are all over the place and because he’s a huge fan of the series they’re never going to stop. I just wish I could piece it all together. However, that would take away half the fun. How in the hell is Krycek back and why in the hell does he disappear so quickly! You’ll feel compelled to piece it all together, and mirror Mulder’s pursuit for the truth.

This issue is fast paced and thrilling. It never lets up and spins an interesting mystery despite only being the second chapter of the ongoing arc. Mulder is pushed into a corner and Scully gets closer to the truth of what’s going on. It’s an interesting change of pace, but something has happened. Mulder figures something out, and is decidedly coy about it.

The issue ends with dangling a thread in your face. Whatever conclusion Mulder had reached seems to be a little flawed, more than that it’s resulted in a mean retread from a horribly tense time in X-Files history. I left this issue completely shocked and dying to read more.

Matthew Dow Smith does a fantastic job with contrasting the hectic beginning with a more somber and removed ending that actually leaves you feeling more uneasy than all the shooting. Smith makes dialogue scenes easy to manage with clear character work and lingers on the right moments long enough to create a palpable sense of tension throughout the entire issue. The moment with the man mopping the floor, you just know that shit was damning, and you’ll never see him again.

The “X-Files Season 10” has been operating like mini episodes of the series. Yet, the pacing and mystery remains the same, so it actually becomes more engaging and maddening. You’ll be in awe of how quickly things can spiral out of control and more engaged in Mulder’s madness because you desire that page turn reveal so bad.

Except Joe Harris likes to pull you along. He’s not ready to give any answers yet and the book is all the better for it. It’s almost agony to read a chapter like this and not know where it’s going but it’s half the fun. I cannot wait to see where things end up next.

‘Witchblade’ is Getting Resurrected This Summer in New Comic Series from Top Cow and Image Comics

Witchblade, the popular comic series that initially ran from 1995 to 2015 and launched a TV series, is getting resurrected in a new comic series from Top Cow and Image Comics. It’s set to unleash heavy metal, black magic and blood this summer.

Look for the new Witchblade series to launch on July 17, 2024.

In Witchblade #1, “New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini’s life was forever fractured by her father’s murder. Cold, cunning, and hellbent on revenge, Sara now stalks a vicious criminal cabal beneath the city, where an ancient power collides and transforms her into something wild, magnificent, and beyond her darkest imaginings. How will Sara use this ancient power, or will she be consumed by it?”

The series is penned by NYT Best-Selling writer Marguerite Bennett (AnimosityBatwomanDC Bombshells) and visualized by artist Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide SquadPower RangersRed Sonja). The creative duo is working with original co-creator Marc Silvestri, who is the CEO of Top Cow Productions Inc. and one of the founders of Image Comics. They are set to reintroduce the series to Witchblade’s enduring fans with “a reimagined origin with contemporary takes on familiar characters and new story arcs that will hook new readers and rekindle the energy and excitement that fueled the 90’s Image Revolution that shaped generations of top creators.”

Bennett said in a statement, “The ability to tell a ferocious story full of monsters, sexuality, vision, and history was irresistible.” She adds, “Our saga is sleek, vicious, ferocious, and has a lot to say about power in the 21st century and will be the first time that we are stopping the roller coaster to let more people on. I’ve loved Witchblade since I was a child, and there is truly no other heroine like Sara with such an iconic legacy and such a rich, brutal relationship to her own body.”

“The Witchblade universe is being modernized to reflect how Marguerite beautifully explores the extreme sides of Sara through memories, her personal thoughts, like desire and hunger, in her solitude and when she is possessed by the Witchblade. So, I had to visually intersect a noir True Detective-like world with a supernatural, horror world that is a fantastic mix between Berserk and Zodiac,” Cafaro stated.

Marc Silvestri notes, “This is brand new mythology around Sara, and I can’t wait for you to fall in love with her and all the twists and turns. Discover Witchblade reimagined this summer, and join us as we bring all the fun of the 90s to the modern age and see how exciting comics can be. I can’t wait for you to read this new series.”
