‘Monsters: Dark Continent’ Is A “War Movie”

Principal photography is underway in Jordan on Monsters: Dark Continent, the sequel to Gareth Edwards Monsters, which landed him the Godzilla job. Edwards will exec produce. Tom Green (the Misfits director, not the Canadian comedian) will be making his feature debut with the film starring Johnny Harris, Sam Keeley, and Joe Dempsie (pictured above).

In Dark Continent, Infected Zones have spread across the world. While US military try to wipe out the monsters, they soon realize they face resistance from a number of corners.

The latter actor recently spoke up about the anticipated sequel, which we knew would be set “some years after” Edwards’ cult hit original. He told Metro UK, “We’re filming it in Jordan now, then we go to Detroit to finish it. It’s going to look incredible. There’s a great atmosphere on set and hopefully it will turn out to be pretty decent. It’s set a few years after the first movie. Monsters have been eradicated from the US but not from other parts of the world. It’s a metaphor for the US’s relationship with the Middle East in some ways. It’s more of a war movie than a monster one.

Filming will take place in Jordan for five weeks, followed by a week in Detroit. Head inside for the longer synopsis! READ MORE

New Video Has A Good Look At The Aftermath Of ‘Godzilla’ Destruction

Legendary’s now-filming Godzilla reboot, helmed by Monsters director Gareth Edwards, has had a fair amount of set footage leaked – nor from the film itself, but from people photographing the production. That being said, this video has a nice look at the aftermath of what seems to be a warzone.

Gareth Edwards is Officially Filming ‘Godzilla’ – Here’s Video Proof!

When Monsters director Gareth Edwards was hired to direct Legendary and WarnerBros. Pictures’ Godzilla I scoffed at the idea and stated it would never happen, that he’d be replaced before the film ever went behind cameras.

Well, I’m a man who can admit when I’m wrong. I stand corrected. Filming is officially underway in Vancouver, and Edwards has shared a video from the first set – an airport. We wish him the best and hope that he delivers a Godzilla for the ages on May 16, 2014!

‘Godzilla’ Starts Shooting In Vancouver And I Eat My Words

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla. has started production in Vancouver under the guidance of helmer Gareth Edwards. Last month I guessed that the film probably wouldn’t start shooting this month because of new writer Frank Darabont’s small window of time in which to turn around a new draft. Well – I’m eating my words (and I’m happy to do it). They’re shooting now. Warner Bros. has also announced that Ken Watanabe (Inception) has joined the production as well.

He joins the previously cast Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Johnson, Juliette Binoche and David Strathairn. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers.

Pack another good actor on to the pile for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla. Per Variety, Juliette Binoche (pictured above; Dan In Real Life, Cosmopolis) is in negotiations to star in the film to be directed by Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards. As always, character descriptions are being kept under wraps.

While Legendary awaits Frank Darabont’s polish on the script, it’s worth noting that apparently none of the talent will be officially signed until he turns in a draft. This includes Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) and Aaron Johnson (Kick Ass).

Pic will bow May 16, 2014, with production expected to start next month. I’ll still believe it when I see it re: that production start date. READ MORE

Frank Darabont Says Origins Of The New ‘Godzilla’ Will Be Different

While ousted producers Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes, Gangster Squad) and Roy Lee (The Departed, The Strangers, The Grudge) move forward with their lawsuit against Legendary Pictures, newly hired screenwriter Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, “The Walking Dead”) is hard at work on his pass of Legendary and Warner Bros.’ Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla remake.

Darabont has to be in a bit of a rush (the film starts shooting in March), but he took some time out to speak with io9. The conversation is encouraging. “What we’re trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy. We’re kind of taking a cool new look at it… We want this to be a terrifying force of nature. And what was really cool, for me, is there was a very compelling human drama that I got to weave into it. It’s not that cliched, thinly disguised romance or bromance, or whatever. It’s different, it’s a different set of circumstances than you’re used to seeing.” When pressed on if he was going to connect Godzilla to a different contemporary issue he replied, “Yes I am, but I’m not going to give it away.

Interesting. Godzilla is still (sort of) expected to hit theaters May 16th, 2014. READ MORE

The ‘Godzilla’ Lawsuit Is Growing In Size

Some new developments behind the Godzilla-sized legal battle over the giant green monster.

Producers Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Doug Davison today launched their own lawsuit in the escalating legal war over the Godzilla reboot, Deadline reports.

The duo filed a suit against Legendary Pictures in LA Superior Court on Thursday, with the cross complaint alleging breach of contract among other counts. The latest legal action also names fellow Godzilla producer and Legendary President/CCO Jon Jashni as a defendant. Legendary’s Chairman and CEO Thomas Tull was not named in the suit.

Today’s action comes in response to Legendary’s suit earlier this month to have Lee and Lin and fellow producer Davison removed from the movie with a $25,000 payout. Legendary alleges that the producers did not contribute much of note to Godzilla’s pre-production and that their services are no longer required. The company says the trio are only entitled to the $25,000 based on a March 2011 Producer Loan Agreement between them and the company.

Lee, Lin and Davison disagree. Which is why Legendary, in their January 9th filing, also sought to have the courts order arbitration to halt any potential temporary restraining order against the film’s production that the company claims the producers threatened to launch if they weren’t more fully compensated.

The new Godzilla, to be directed by Gareth Edwards, is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros and Legendary on May 16 2014.

Multiple Monsters For ‘Godzilla’; Lawsuit Gets Ugly

CHUD is reporting that Legendary and Warner Bros.’ Godzilla will feature more than the iconic dino monster. They report “confirmed” news that the Gareth Edwards-directed film, in theaters May 16, 2014, will feature more than one monster, adding that two new monsters will also be wreaking havoc.

Warner Bros. has also made it clear that their interpretation of the material “follows the story of a solider” and is “way different” than the Toho Godzilla films. Shooting begins this spring.

In other news, things are getting ugly with the removal of two producers on the reboot. Deadline discovered that Legendary Pictures today filed suit (read it here) against producers Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Doug Davison to have them removed from the sequel and to stop a potential temporary restraining order by them against the film’s production. This is truly bizarre news to me as I personally have known the trio to be attached since before we exclusively broke the news on the remake back in August of 2009. READ MORE

Frank Darabont Rewriting ‘Godzilla’ As Producers Dan Lin And Roy Lee Exit The Project

Update: Per AICN the film starts shooting on March 14th in Vancouver and Hawaii and will operate under the working title of “Nautilus.”

Legendary and Warner Bros.’ claim that their Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla remake is due to start shooting in March – but it hit more than a few snags over the weekend. One potentially good development is that Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, “The Walking Dead”) has been hired to do a pass on the script. I’m not sure how they can fully accomodate and implement a rewrite in time for a March start date, but weirder things have happened. Then comes the news that producers Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes, Gangster Squad) and Roy Lee (The Departed, The Strangers, The Grudge) have been let go from the project.

This could potentially head to lawsuit country, there have been some reports that the parting is amicable, but this morning it appears as though all is not well. Per Deadline, “Actually, it could prove as toxic to Godzilla than the time the fire breather took on the smog monster Hedorah. This one’s going to wind up in the courts, I’m told. My understanding is, Lin and Lee refused to reduce the fees they signed on for when the original deal was made. Legendary brass feels it has the latitude to get rid of them, and is doing just that, exercising a pay or play clause and paying them upfront money to go away, with no back-end or credit on the film. The potential back-end on a global franchise is where the big bucks are.

Yikes. Godzilla is still (sort of) expected to hit theaters May 16th, 2014. READ MORE

Image From ‘Godzilla’ Comic-Con Teaser Makes Its Way Online

Legendary and Warner Bros.’ have shared an image related to their upcoming Godzilla remake. I say “related” because it’s from the Comic-Con teaser that premiered – and somehow didn’t leak (impressive) – back in July. The film hasn’t actually started shooting, but since the teaser was cut to give us (and the studio) an approximation of director Gareth Edwards’ approach I think it’s indicative of the scale of destruction we’ll be seeing in the film.

Last week producer Dan Lin told Collider, “We’re planning to film in March. We are in deep pre-production. Gareth [Edwards] has really mapped out his vision for the movie, you saw the teaser, but Gareth thanks to Thomas Tull’s help he took over a whole stage on the Warner Brothers lot and not only showed the teaser you saw, he had some models built of Godzilla, he had art decorated all over the soundstage, he had pre-vis of some of the big action sequences in the movie. So we’re in deep pre-production and Gareth’s vision of the movie is really exciting it’s a true re-boot of Godzilla. And you saw from the Comic-Con footage it is a grounded, realistic version of Godzilla. What would happen if Godzilla came into our world today?

‘Godzilla’ Reboot Will Be Grounded In Reality

The team behind Legendary and Warner Bros.’ Godzilla have done an amazing job in keeping their lips sealed tight. No information has come out of the process other than this past Comic-Con’s premiere of a teaser and one-sheet.

The boys at Collider have attempted to get producer Dan Lin to break the silence on the latest reboot that’s to be helmed by Gareth Edwards. He at least gets some info on the production schedule…and a bit more.

We’re planning to film in March,” said Lin. “We are in deep pre-production. And you saw from the Comic-Con footage it is a grounded, realistic version of Godzilla. What would happen if Godzilla came into our world today?

This seems like the obvious direction to take the franchise, and insiders have told me the difficulty they had in coming up with a new take. It should be interesting to see what the collective minds of David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Max Borenstein (Seventh Son) have come up with. Godzilla will rise from the Ocean May 16, 2014.
