‘Stoker’ Star Replacement For Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’

Alice in Wonderland and Stoker‘s Mia Wasikowska, pictured above, is in talks with Legendary Pictures to star in Guillermo del Toro’s gothic horror movie Crimson Peak, TheWrap has learned.

Wasikowska plans to take over the role that Emma Stone had originally been attached to but was forced to depart last month due to a scheduling issue.

Wasikowska is being eyed to play a young author named Edith Cushing who discovers that her charming new husband is not who he appears to be.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Jessica Chastain, below, will co-star as siblings from an aristocratic family, while del Toro’s Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam also has a lead role in the movie.

Del Toro wrote the haunted house thriller with Matthew Robbins and Lucinda Coxon. Legendary will produce and serve as one of the movie’s main financing partners, while Universal has retained an option to co-finance at a later date. Production will begin early next year. READ MORE

These behind the scenes featurettes on Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim are fascinating. This newest one takes a look at their reasoning behind set construction and also includes lots more monster footage. Plus? Want to design your own Jaeger? Go here!

In theaters July 12, “When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. [TV] Guillermo del Toro’s “The Strain” Adds Two More

A day after casting the female lead, FX’s Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse pilot “The Strain” has added two more to its cast, reports THR.

Titanic‘s Jonathan Hyde and Inglourious BasterdsRichard Sammel, pictured, have boarded the Corey Stoll starrer.

Based on del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s book trilogy first published in 2009, “the story centers on a vampire virus that infects New York and the CDC doctor, Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather, who investigates the case.

“House of Cards” breakout Corey Stoll will play Goodweather, the head of the CDC’s Canary Team in New York who is called upon to investigate a viral outbreak connected to an evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph will lead a team of New Yorkers as it wages a war and defends humanity.

Hyde, who played Ismay in James Cameron’s Titanic, will portray the series regular role of Eldritch Palmer, an elderly tycoon who’s the third-richest man in the world who has been an invalid since childhood. Though his life-long fight against his frail body, he’s developed a relentless drive to attain immortality by any means necessary.

Sammel, meanwhile, will play Thomas Eichorst, a mysterious figure from Professor Abraham Setrakian’s past whose re-emergence in New York is not a coincidence.

Behind-The-Scenes Video For ‘Pacific Rim’ Explores The Amazing Jaeger Piloting System

I love this behind the scenes glimpse (via IGN) at Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim because it shares and explores one of the movies most interesting concepts. If you’re a Jaeger pilot, your co-pilot has to know everything about you. Literally. I think this is the key to lending the film some immense human relationship stakes without having to break away from the action too much, the film combines the two.

The Creators Of ‘Mama’ On How A Cheetah Inspired The Film And Ideas For A Possible Prequel!

The Guillermo del Toro produced Mama, starring Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), will make its Blu-ray and DVD debut tomorrow May 7, 2013. With that in mind I recently hopped on the phone with the film’s director Andy Muschietti and his co-writer Barbara Muschietti to discuss the challenges of turning a 3 minute short into a full-fledged feature. Their well-timed nugget of inspiration came as a surprise to me, to say the least.

The film “is the story of two vanished girls whose parents were killed. When the girls reappear, their uncle and his girlfriend care for them, but that doesn’t mean their deceased mother is completely out of the picture.

5 Things We Learned From The New ‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer!!

Warner Bros. Pictures finally released the Wondercon trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim yesterday and it 100% reinvigorated me. I was starting to worry that this was just going to be another, almost boring, “summer blockbuster” when this new footage came along and convinced me that it would be anything but. I also learned (and re-learned) a few things about the film that effectively killed all the second guessing I’d been doing, so I figured I’d jot them down.

Ron Perlman Says ‘Hellboy 3′ Must Happen! But When?!

A few months back I spoke with Selma Blair who wasn’t shy about her desire to be in Hellboy 3 stating, “It’s my dream to work with Guillermo del Toro again… I mean [the story is] all set up. ‘Hellboy 3′ is the biggest payoff and the biggest horror. I want to see what these twins are up to, if one’s the devil and one’s an angel. I want to see what Hellboy and Liz are up to! I know the film is the apocalypse and the apocalypse isn’t cheap to shoot so we have to find some funding and get going with it!

Now Ron Perlman is jumping in on the love, telling IGN, “We both walked away from Hellboy 2 agreeing that there would never be another one. But, with the passage of time, it became clear to me that he really always designed it as a trilogy. There are so many questions posed in the first two films that absolutely need to be answered. I said, ‘You owe it to the world to finish this trilogy.’ I’ve been giving him Jewish guilt… He’s just so busy, but I’m going to keep working away at the body. I’m pushing seventy so he better f*cking do this soon.

That’s true though. Del Toro is extremely busy. “The Strain”, Crimson Peak, “Monster”, a possible Pacific Rim 2, The Haunted Mansion, his passion project At The Mountains Of Magic… am I leaving any out? Yes, actually. And while Perlman at 63 isn’t exactly “pushing 70″ (and has shown little in the way of diminished physicality), you have to wonder if he won’t be “pushing 80″ by the time Del Toro gets around to making it. Of course there’s always the possibility that projects and schedules align, after all, we know Del Toro’s not even going to do all of the project listed above – he just likes a lot of irons in the fire.

What do you think? Will Hellboy 3 ever happen?

[TV] Durand Moves From ‘Night’ To ‘The Strain’

Wow, this one’s moving right on along, isn’t it? Kevin Durand (pictured above; “Lost”, Dark Was The Night) is joining the TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s vampire novel trilogy “The Strain” with Carlton Cuse (“Bates Motel”) as showrunner. Per Variety, Durand will play “ a second-generation Ukranian-American, a once-solitary rat exterminator who eagerly joins the war against vampires who have invaded New York.

As reported yesterday, Corey Stoll (“House Of Cards”) will be playing the lead of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather. The project already has a full writing staff in place churning out scripts, and FX has committed $500,000 to creature creation

The book is “a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

Del Toro will direct the pilot (he co-wrote the script with Chuck Hogan).

[TV] Guillermo Del Toro Making A “Monster” With HBO

Guillermo del Toro is partnering with HBO to bring Monster to life, per Deadline. While things are only just now entering the development stage, the series will be based on an 18 volume Japanese Manga by author Naoki Urasawa.

It sounds like Del Toro will co-write the series outline with Steven Thompson (“Dr. Who”, “Sherlock”). Thompson will then script the pilot and it’s planned that del Toro intends to direct it and set up the world (like Eli Roth did in “Hemlock Grove”).

The book “is about the worldwide search by a young doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived. He is a 12-year old boy, and the doctor’s decision to save his life has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s Box that leaves the doc battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.

Del Toro will also be executive producer and Thompson co-executive producer, with Angry Films’ partners Don Murphy and Susan Montford executive producing with Exile’s Gary Ungar. “Monster” was originally set up at New Line, but the lengthy nature of the book dictated that it would be a better fit for TV.
