Hammer Horror is a British production company that was birthed in the 50s but died in the 70s. Some of the films they’ve produced were interesting and often more macabre takes on the Universal Monster pictures of the 30s – like The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula AD 1972, and Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb. Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby perhaps being the most critically acclaimed entry. These highly influential films were certainly popular in their day, but Hammer’s popularity waned into the 1980s, where they all but disappeared. READ MORE

loch ness Woman In Black Director Hunts For The Loch Ness Monster!

Optimum founder Will Clarke, former Exclusive Media managing director Andy Mayson and former Pathé International exec Mike Runagall have jointly created UK-based Altitude Film Entertainment

The first partnerships are with directors James Watkins (Eden Lake, The Woman In Black), Owen Harris (Holy Flying Circus) and Ben Craig (Modern Times) along with playwright Matt Charman and producer Gregor Cameron.

With Watkins, Altitude is developing The Loch, a terrifying, bold new take on the Loch Ness monster myth, which Watkins is co-writing with first-time filmmaker Simon Duric.

Altitude is also teaming with Cameron and Harris to make Kill Your Friends, set in the Britpop era of the late 90s and based on John Niven’s novel. Details on his novel can be read below, although, I can’t stop thinking about how badly I want to see a good Loch Ness movie. READ MORE

Hammer Films Haunted By ‘Woman In Black’ Installment, ‘Angels of Death’

WomanLandscape10412 Hammer Films Haunted By Woman In Black Installment, Angels of Death

The team behind British horror hit The Woman In Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, are re-uniting to produce a follow-up, reports THR.

The revamped legendary British production label Hammer, Alliance Films and Cross Creek Pictures are to team up with novelist Susan Hill on the proposed story that will pick the tale up 40 years on.

The Woman in Black, directed by James Watkins has become the highest grossing British horror film of the past 20 years, grossing over $33 million in the U.K. and recently crossing the $120 million box office mark worldwide.

Screenwriter Jon Croker (Desert Dancer) is now developing the screenplay for the sequel, The Woman in Black: Angels Of Death, based on an original story by Hill, under development for the past few years and now complete.

‘The Woman in Black’ was set in the early 1900s and detailed the story of a young lawyer who is ordered to travel to a remote corner of the U.K. to sort out the papers of a recently deceased client. In the eerie setting of Eel Marsh House he discovers the vengeful ghost of the title.

The next installment, will pick the story up four decades later and focus on the concept of a couple and the experience they have when they encounter the haunted setting of Eel Marsh House.

It will be produced by Exclusive Media, Talisman, Cross Creek Pictures and Alliance Films, in addition to Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, who will serve as executive producer. READ MORE

‘The Woman In Black’ Scares Up Record-Breaking Numbers In The UK

WomanLandscape10412 The Woman In Black Scares Up Record Breaking Numbers In The UK

THR writes that Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Harry Potter role in British horror flick The Woman In Black has helped scare up record breaking figures for a British fright flick.

The Hammer-produced film, directed by James Watkins and adapted by Jane Goldman from the classic novel by Susan Hill, has spent three weeks at number one in the U.K. boxoffice ringing up a total of £14.6 million ($23.2 million) from 457 screens.

The makers claim those figures make it the U.K.’s highest grossing British horror film since records began 20 years ago.

The movie has now scared up more box office lucre than Hollywood -backed productions shot in the U.K. with British talent including The Others (£11.9 million, $18.9 million), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (£11.5 million, $18.2 million) and Interview with a Vampire (£10.7 million, $17 million), as well as home-grown horrors such as Shaun Of The Dead (£6.7 million, $10.6 million) and 28 Days Later (£6.3 million, $10 million).

Xavier Marchand, president of worldwide distribution, Alliance Films and managing director Momentum Pictures, said with The Woman in Black occupying the number one spot in the U.K. for three weeks and its performance stateside that has seen it take more than $50 million, it indicates how British films “can resonate not only here in the U.K. but also abroad.READ MORE

Mr. Disgusting isn’t a huge fan of the film, “What’s most troubling is ‘Eden Lake’ director James Watkins’ inability to craft a “real” scare…there are two should-be terrifying moments that fall completely flat on its face.” Full review here. In a last second attempt to get your ass into theaters, CBS has released the opening scene from The Woman in Black, which seems to be getting a pass by most critics even though I wasn’t a fan.

From Hammer Films, “The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers. As he works alone in the client’s isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover tragic secrets, his unease growing when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed only in black. Receiving only silence from the locals, Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent.

On February 3 CBS Films releases Hammer’s The Woman in Black, an old fashioned ghost story starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter 1-7.2) and Ciaran Hinds (There Will Be Blood). With a screenplay by Jane Goldman (X Men: First Class, Kick Ass), based on the novel by Susan Hill, the film is directed by James Watkins who helmed Eden Lake in addition to writing The Descent: Part 2.

This film has the most wide array of marketing material I’ve seen recently, probably due to Radcliffe’s status as international superstar Harry Potter – many different territories are getting their own unique materials. Today we have a new UK TV spot.

In this supernatural thriller, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a widowed lawyer whose grief has put his career as a lawyer in jeopardy, is sent to a remote village to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased eccentric.  But upon his arrival, it soon becomes clear that everyone in the town is keeping a deadly secret.  Although the townspeople try to keep Kipps from learning their tragic history, he soon discovers that the house belonging to his client is haunted by the ghost of a woman who is determined to find someone and something she lost…and no one, not even the children, are safe from her vengeance.
