Seven years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have spread worldwide. Humans have been knocked off the top of the food chain, with disparate communities struggling for survival. American soldiers are being sent abroad to protect US interests from the Monsters, but the war is far from being won.
Noah, a haunted soldier with several tours under his belt, is sent on a mission: an American soldier has gone rogue deep in the Infected Zone, and Noah must reach him and take him out. But when Noah’s unit and transport are destroyed, he finds himself with only a young and inexperienced cadet for company – the brother of the man Noah has been sent to kill.
The two soldiers must go on a life-altering journey through the dark heart of monster territory, accompanied by a young local woman to guide them. By the time the three of them reach their goal, they will have been forced to confront the fear that the true monsters on the planet may not be alien after all.
Principal photography is underway in Jordan on Monsters: Dark Continent, the sequel to Gareth Edwards Monsters, which landed him the Godzilla job. Edwards will exec produce. Tom Green (the Misfits director, not the Canadian comedian) will be making his feature debut with the film starring Johnny Harris, Sam Keeley, and Joe Dempsie (pictured above).
“In Dark Continent, Infected Zones have spread across the world. While US military try to wipe out the monsters, they soon realize they face resistance from a number of corners.”
The latter actor recently spoke up about the anticipated sequel, which we knew would be set “some years after” Edwards’ cult hit original. He told Metro UK, “We’re filming it in Jordan now, then we go to Detroit to finish it. It’s going to look incredible. There’s a great atmosphere on set and hopefully it will turn out to be pretty decent. It’s set a few years after the first movie. Monsters have been eradicated from the US but not from other parts of the world. It’s a metaphor for the US’s relationship with the Middle East in some ways. It’s more of a war movie than a monster one.”
Filming will take place in Jordan for five weeks, followed by a week in Detroit. Head inside for the longer synopsis! READ MORE
I’m not sure that it warrants a sequel, considering the first is incredibly bland, yet Gareth Edwards’ Monsters will continue on.
Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas has originally been attached to direct Monsters 2, but now, according to Screen Daily, Tom Green (Misfits) is taking the reins on the newly titled Monsters: Dark Continent.
Jay Basu, who wrote Fast Girls and The Dinosaur Project, penned the new screenplay for Vertigo. The original sequel synopsis went like so: “The tale is set in a walled city, as a “Heart of Darkness” story about two brothers finding each other in a world of monsters. The variety of aliens will differ in the next installment.“
