Director Jaume Balagueró ([Rec] and [Rec] 2) switches gears a bit with his creepy new film Sleep Tight. The film was written by Alberto Marini (Films to Keep You Awake: To Let) and inhabits a much different tonal space than the [REC] films.

To that end I recently shot Balagueró a few questions via email. We touched on the change of pace this film represents, working with 700 live cockroaches and what to expect from his next directorial effort, [REC] 4: Apocalypse

IN the film “Toiling silently among the residents of an everyday Barcelona apartment building, doorman César (Luis Tosar, Even the Rain, Miami Vice) harbors a dark secret: his sole desire in life is to make others unhappy. When he sets his sights on Clara (Marta Etura, Cell 211, Dark Blue Almost Black), one of his building’s cheeriest residents, his sick need blossoms into a full-fledged obsession.” Sleep Tight was nominated for more than 20 awards in Spain and won six Gaudi Awards, including Best Director, Best Actor for Luis Tosar and Best Screenplay.

Sony Dates ‘REC 3: Genesis’ For Home Video (Still No Blu-ray)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a DVD release of REC 3: Genesis for November 6th. Retail will be around $22.99. The only extra material will be deleted scenes, and outtakes, reports DVD Active. Sony sucks for not releasing any of these on Blu-ray.

“Clara and Koldo’s wedding unfolds through the lens of a video camera that captures their beautiful ceremony and the festive reception that follows. But the camera also bears unblinking witness to the shocking reality of chaos and horror that ensues after a virus spreads through the reception, transforming the wedding guests into something inhuman, and forcing the newlywed couple into a terrifying fight for their lives. Separated amid the mayhem, the newlywed couple discover the true meaning of the vow, ’til death do us part.”

Cool New Poster For ‘[REC] 3: Genesis’ Takes The Cake!!!

Now on VOD platforms and in select theaters starting September 7 is Paco Plaza’s [REC] 3 Genesis, the third film in the found footage franchise that blows the scope wide open. Now the film has a cool new poster courtesy of “Walking Dead” illustrator Tony Moore.

In the sequel, “Koldo and Clara are about to celebrate the most important day of their lives: their wedding. Everything appears to be running smoothly and the bride and groom and their families are enjoying a wonderful day; that is until some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness. Before they know what’s happening, the bride and groom find themselves in the middle of a hellish ordeal, as an uncontrollable torrent of violence is unleashed on the wedding. Magnet Releasing just released [REC] 3: Genesis on VOD Today, August 2nd and will release it in select theaters on Friday, September 7. While Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró co-directed the first two installments, they decided to split up parts 3 and 4, with Plaza taking Genesis and Balagueró tackling the upcoming [REC] 4: Apocalypse.

I recently hopped on the phone with Plaza and we talked about his compassionate protagonists, his more conventional shooting style in [REC] 3: Genesis and what might become of [REC] 4: Apocalypse.

After a few months of silence, Magnet Releasing has announced [REC] 3: Genesis for VOD on Friday, August 3 and select theaters on Friday, September 7. Along with the confirmed dates comes the gruesome, chainsaw revving red band trailer. Dig it below.
