RentaGhost

Ben Stiller will play Fred Mumford, a recently deceased guy determined to be more productive as a corpse than he was during his life as a slacker. He attempts to set himself up in a business with a couple of other ghouls, starting a temp agency for the dead. Mumford and cohorts rent out ghouls and ghosts to the living, until things go awry. The original series, created by Bob Block, ran on BBC1 from 1976-1984.

Wasn’t it just yesterday I was reporting on a new Platinum Dunes pic? Oh yeah, it was. Well it seems that after taking some time off after A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010), Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew form are getting busy again. And on some original projects too.

Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Arthur) has been set for the lead in Hauntrepreneur. A pic that will again pair Platinum with Paramount.

Per Variety, “The story revolves around a family that has trouble adjusting to a new town and hires a peculiar man who calls himself the Hauntrepreneur to help them. In an attempt to bring them together, the man creates a haunted house filled with an odd cast of characters. Par had no comment on the casting. Par picked up the spec from Scott Rosenberg in October and will now look to lock down a director.

I know a lot of people hate Brand, but he has yet to really rub me the wrong way in a film role. I actually think he’s pretty funny and has some nice, understated, dramatic chops that he doesn’t really get enough credit for. I know. Turn in my indie cred card, right?

What do you guys think? I’m not sure how long I give that title lasting, though. READ MORE

Ben Stiller Uses Fox’s ‘RentaGhost’ Service

Ben Stiller will star in RentaGhost, based on the British comedy series about a temp agency for the dead, for Fox.

Variety reports that Fox is in negotiations to acquire rights to the comedy, which had been in development at Warner Bros. with Russell Brand toplining.

Fox has tapped the Night at the Museum team of Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant to pen the script.

The original BBC series, created by Bob Block, ran for 58 episodes between 1976 and 1984 and centered on the recently-deceased Fred Mumford being determined to be more productive in the afterlife than he was during his 27-year existence. Mumford established RentaGhost — renting out ghouls, ghosts and other specters — to the living but things do not go according to plan.

Michael Staniforth, Edward Brayshaw, Michael Darbyshire and Anthony Jackson starred in the TV series.
