Robert De Niro’s Bright Lights Tainted by ‘Red Lights’ In Fresh Imagery

In theaters July 13, Millenium Entertainment has provided us with 5 new hi-res stills from Red Lights (Ryan Daley’s review), hailing from Buried director Rodrigo Cortes.

Having premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, “Veteran paranormal researchers Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) debunk fraudulent claims of ghost whispering, faith healing and other psychic phenomena by detecting what Matheson calls “red lights,” the subtle tricks behind every staged supernatural occurrence. But when the legendary blind psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro)comes out of retirement after 30 years, his once-fearless adversary Matheson warns Buckley to back off, fearing reprisal from the powerful Silver. Determined to discredit Silver, Buckley and his star student (Elizabeth Olsen) use every tool at their disposal to uncover the truth behind the charismatic, spoon-bending, mind reader. But Buckley is forced to reexamine his own core beliefs as his quest builds to a mind-blowing conclusion in this taut psychological thriller.

Bill Murray Seems To Be Inching Towards ‘Ghostbusters 3′ (Even Though He’ll Probably Never Do It)

Bill Murray will probably never reunite with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson for Ghostbusters 3. Yet he occasionally will dole out some kind of info and dangle the carrot a little bit. Does he like f*cking with Dan Aykroyd that much? Maybe. In the below interview with David Letterman he seems to be considering the prospect when he says, “we’ll try again.” But, honestly, I just don’t think it’s in the cards.

Columbia Pictures hopes to tell the story of a ragtag group of paranormal researchers whom reopen their notorious ghost removal service, with a new generation of Ghostbusters brought on board to be green slimed and trained to contain the mischievous spirits. We previously reported that the new ‘Busters will be lead by Dana and Peter’s lovechild, Oscar. Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver have both been closely connected to the project.

I personally hope Ghostbusters 3 never happens. I love the first movie but, at this point, a third is something we only think we want. When we finally get it (if ever), we’ll hate it. I think Murray is being smart about this one, his trepidations are well founded.

Sigourney Weaver Explains ‘Red Lights’ In New Interactive Video

A pretty cool video has landed on YouTube that features star Sigourney Weaver explaining what Red Lights (Ryan Daley’s review) actually are. Hailing from Buried director Rodrigo Cortes, the Weaver asks you to watch the video for “red lights” and to click when you spot one. Interactive videos? Nice.

['Aliens' Revisited] The Perfect Sequel, Just As Good As Its Predecessor In Completely Different Ways

With the June 8th release of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus fast approaching, we thought we’d take a look back at the original Alien franchise with which it “shares strands of DNA.” Whether or not there are xenomorphs as we know them in Prometheus, it’s abundantly clear that it takes place in the same universe.

In the weeks leading up to the release of that film I’m going to revisit the four films in the Alien franchise (sorry, not going to subject myself to AVP) in order to gather my thoughts in anticipation of the new outing. Last week I revisited Alien: Resurrection and absolutely hated it. The week before that I revisited Alien 3 and discovered a lot to like.

Now we come down to the two titans in the series, and this week I’m taking another look at Aliens. This is one of my favorite movies and I bet it’s one of yours as well. But what makes it tick? And is it better than Alien?

Let’s talk more inside. READ MORE

['Alien: Resurrection' Revisited] A Horrible Tonal Nightmare From Which I Was Lucky To Escape

Next up is Alien: Resurrection. You may recall that last week I revisited Alien 3 and discovered a lot to like.

Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Alien: Resurrection. When it was first released in 1997, the film was touted by the studio (and some critics and fans) as a return to form. I have no idea what they were talking about (other than that’s the kind of thing everyone says a few years after a disappointing franchise entry). It’s awful. Tonally, it doesn’t feel like an Alien film at all. And while the script by Joss Whedon contains an abundance of great ideas, director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (City Of Lost Children, Amelie) doesn’t even come close to executing them properly.

For those of you waiting for a movie that Mr. Disgusting and I really disagree on, this is the one. He holds a soft spot in his heart for this film, while I wish every existing print could be rocketed into the sun. Let’s talk more inside. READ MORE

['Alien 3' Revisited] Why It’s Not So Bad And Why Killing Newt And Hicks Is A Good Thing

First up is Alien 3. Considered a disappointment upon its release in 1992, the film underperformed at the box office and left many fans with a bad taste in their mouth. Stories about its troubled production have become the stuff of legend and many people fail to even regard it as part of the filmography of director David Fincher (Zodiac, The Social Network, Se7en, Fight Club). Even I hated the movie, and I was pretty easy to please back then.

I recently took another look at the theatrical cut of the film and discovered, to my great surprise, that it’s not that bad after all. For a film without a finalized script, it gets more right than it does wrong – which is pretty surprising. Head inside for more. READ MORE

‘Red Lights’ Will Display Battle Of The Uber-Psychics This July

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Millenium Entertainment is to release Rodrigo Cortes’ battle of the psychics, Red Lights, in theaters on July 13.

Starring Sigourney Weaver, Elizabeth Olsen and Cillian Murphy, “Two investigators of paranormal hoaxes, the veteran Dr. Margaret Matheson and her young assistant, Tom Buckley, study the most varied metaphysical phenomena with the aim of proving their fraudulent origins. Simon Silver, a legendary blind psychic, reappears after an enigmatic absence of 30 years to become the greatest international challenge to both orthodox science and professional skeptics. Tom starts to develop an intense obsession with Silver, whose magnetism becomes stronger with each new manifestation of inexplicable events. As Tom gets closer to Silver, tension mounts, and his worldview is threatened to its core.

We were not a fan out of its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Unfortunately, as we update to the new site, the review is not available at this time. READ MORE

And now some character one-sheets are beginning to emerge. I kind of like these, they’re slightly derivative but look cool. And I’m still eager to see the film, hopefully I like it more than some of the other people I’ve spoken to.

[Sundance 12] Interview: Red Lights Director Rodrigo Cortes

Rodrigo Cortes’ film Red Lights (review) divided audiences at Sundance. Some viewers really dug it. Cortes could tell I was not a fan, even though my questions were objective and diplomatic. It was cool though, he welcomed my discussion anyway.

Red Lights is named for the giveaway clues that something doesn’t belong. Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver play scientific debunkers of paranormal hoaxes, faced with their match (Robert DeNiro), who either can circumvent all their countermeasures, or he really has psychic powers.

In his introduction to the premiere screening, Cortes told the audience not to expect anything. Now that you may have heard, we present my discussion with Cortes from the Sundance Film Festival. READ MORE

Bill Murray Shreds ‘Ghostbusters III’ Script, Sends Rude Note; Exits Project?

Bill Murray Shreds Ghostbusters III Script, Sends Rude Note; Exits Project?

As much as I scoff at the National Enquirer, I’ve always believed strongly that there’s a small bit of truth in everything they report. Living in Los Angeles the past decade as sort of made this belief more prevalent.

With that said, the tabloid trash mag is reporting on some pretty insane Ghostbusters III news that should (maybe) be taken with a grain of salt.

As previously reported, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and Harold Ramis had all agreed to rebirth the Ghostbusters franchise – but Murray, who’s got script approval, kept refusing to take producers’ phone calls after they’d send rewrites.

But here’s the kicker, the site is reporting that after they sent him the latest reworked screenplay weeks ago, Murray fired back his shocking answer – nailing the coffin shut forever – by sending Dan and Harold a box containing the new script SHREDDED into confetti, along with this nasty note: “No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!

Insiders say furious Dan and Harold vow that Bill’s off their “who ya gonna call” list forever – and they’ll make the movie WITHOUT him! YIKES. Aykroyd eluded to this back on August 25. Maybe now they’ll take Winston Zeddemore a bit more seriously?

Good news is that it sounds as if the spring start date will be met, too bad it’ll be without the spine of the old ghost bustin’ crew. READ MORE

Ernie Hudson Once Again the ‘Ghostbusters’ Fourth Wheel?

One of our inside jokes here at Bloody Disgusting is Ernie Hudson’s involvement in the potential third Ghostbusters film. Hudson, who has resorted to doing a fairly large amount of autograph conventions, would probably give just about anything to return to the franchise that gave his career major life. So why do I find it unsettling that he hasn’t even been contacted about returning? Will the “fourth wheel” Ghost Buster once again be the last to join?

According to THR, Hudson, who played Winston Zeddmore in the Ghostbusters films, says he hasn’t been approached about a role in the film.

I haven’t seen anybody with any money, but I hear it’s happening, and I’ve been reading all the press stuff, and the fans have been telling me that it’s on,” Hudson said.

Ivan Reitman, who directed and produced the first two movies, returns with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and even Sigourney Weaver.

Recent reports indicate that the project is close to its demise as star Bill Murray refuses to read the latest draft.

Bill Murray to Howard Stern: “I Guess I’m the Problem”

Howard Stern was lucky enough to receive a call from the elusive BIll Murray, the legendary comedian/actor who marches to the beat of his own drum. Over the past few weeks Murray has had multiple fingers pointed in his direction as the hold up on the long-gestured Ghostbusters 3. The truth?

Stern asked Murray about the rumors: “I guess I’m the problem. Before I was an asset. Now I’m a problem,” he explained. Bill said he had the script somewhere (“I haven’t read it yet.“) and liked his Ghostbusters co-stars (“We really are funny together.“) but hadn’t taken the time to consider the project: “It’s not the foremost thing in my mind right now so I don’t think about it.

I seriously think it’s time to official give up any hope on seeing Murray and Weaver’s love-child take the reigns as a new Ghost Buster. Maybe they can just license Murray’s likeness and insert him as a CG ghost? I’ll take that blow just to see Columbia Pictures get this off the ground. Sigh.

Supposedly, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and Sigourney Weaver have agreed to return, with Ivan Reitman taking the reigns. I just want to see Rick Moranis back in action!
