Blair Witch director Eduardo Sanchez’s extremely well regarded comeback, Lovely Molly (review), premiered to an enthusiastic audience this past week at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin. Having world premiered at the TIFF last September, Image Entertainment will release the haunting film in limited theaters on May 18th.

I recently hopped on the phone with co-writer and director Eduardo Sanchez, as well as Gretchen Lodge (who plays the title role in the film) to discuss the challenges of making the film, staying in character and their upcoming projects.

Starring Gretchen Lodge, Johnny Lewis and Alexandra Holden, “When newlywed Molly Reynolds returns to her long-abandoned family home, frightful reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. [SXSW 12 Review] Citadel A Freakish Horror Drama

Winner of the SXSW Audience Award, I had the chance to check out the Cronenberg’-esque Citadel at the Austin film fest and was also blown away:

Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow’s beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. [SXSW '12] Irish Horror ‘Citadel’ Joins Texas Film Fest

[SXSW 12] Irish Horror Citadel Joins Texas Film Fest

Now that Sundance has come and gone it’s time to focus on the SXSW Film Festival, which takes place this March in Austin, Texas. Bloody Disgusting learned today that the Irish Citadel has been officially selected, via the IFB.

The Irish/UK co-production is directed by hot new writer-director Ciarán Foy. The film features Aneurin Barnard (Ironclad, Hunky Dory, Guinea Pigs) in the lead role of Tommy, alongside Scotland’s finest, James Cosmo (Braveheart, Troy, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Runway) in the role of The Priest, and Wunmi Mosuka (I am Slave, One Night in Emergency) as Marie. Co-stars include Ingrid Craigie and Amy Shiels.

Citadel is a story about pure terror. Packs of twisted feral children prowl the dark urban landscape of Edens town, the council estate from Hell. Concealed beneath hooded tops, they attack innocent adults with septic syringes to harvest their blood and abduct small children to swell their ranks. Abandoned by the police, the small community that remains is plagued by the brutal and rampant gangs that few truly understand. Emerging at night, they are especially drawn to anyone showing fear – in fact they can see it and sense it. When Tommy¹s pregnant wife Joanne is viciously attacked, it turns his world upside down. Joanne is left in a coma. As a result of the trauma, Tommy suffers crippling agoraphobia rendering him housebound and barely able to look after their infant daughter Elsa. Trapped in Edenstown, Tommy desperately needs to leave. Before he can escape however, Tommy’s worst nightmare comes true – Elsa is kidnapped. To save his daughter, he is forced to trust a vigilante priest who understands the horrific truth about the gangs. Tommy must now face the demons of his past by entering the one place that he fears the most – an abandoned tower block called the Citadel.

‘Attack the Block’ Hype is REAL, Sony Screen Gems Acquires!

It’s been a long, long time since I’ve seen an indie genre film get this much hype. The difference is that people have actually seen Joe Cornish’s UK Attack the Block, and have since raved about it (our own David Harley caught it at SXSW where it won the “Midnight Feature Audience Award”; read his review). Even horror icon Eli Roth spent the past two days sticking on the topic via his personal Twitter. I personally have yet to see a negative reaction.

The hype is real

Sony Screen Gems, known for mediocre PG-13 thrillers, has acquired it. Could this be the start of something new? Let’s hope so!

Attack The Block pits a gang of South London inner city youths against marauding aliens. Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard, Luke Treadaway, Jumayn Hunter and Nick Frost star. Popular Shaun of the Dead star Edgar Wright served as executive producer.

SXSW ’11 REVIEW: ‘Attack the Block’ the Best of the Fest!

Our final review out of this month’s SXSW Film Festival is for Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block, which has been receiving RAVE reviews over the past few weeks. The genre comedy follows a gang of South London teenagers defending their housing project home against an alien attack. David Harley LOVED it:

A heavy dose of dry, witty humor mixed with engaging action and a score by Basement Jaxx that will appeal to fans of Daft Punk’s ‘Tron: Legacy’ work, ‘Attack The Block’ is an unquestionable homerun and the kind of film that doesn’t come around often enough. Cornish manages to take what could have been unlikeable antagonists and transforms them into heroes with razor-sharp wits and tongues through the occurrence of unlikely, random circumstances, making him come off like a British Shane Black. It’s a shame that the dialect is what the industry is buzzing about as the film looks for a distributor, and not how fun and refreshing an experience it is.

SXSW ’11 REVIEW: ‘Detention’ Melts David Harley’s Brain

After the SXSW premiere last week, the reviews online for Joseph Kahn’s Detention have been nothing short of brutal, but not everyone agrees.

Bloody Disgusting’s David Harley takes a different perspective, having a blast during Kahn’s mind-melter the follows a downtrodden 17-year-old girl who is sent to detention where she must survive a slasher film killer and save the world in time for prom.

‘Detention’ can be best appreciated as a live-action cartoon, and is more energetic and fun than the last couple of ‘Scary Movie’ sequels. It isn’t really a middle-of-the-road sort of film; you’re either going to really love the ridiculous fast-paced nature of this horror-sci-fi-comedy or you’ll really despise Kahn’s self-indulgence and his attempt to bombard you with more than you can mentally process in one sitting. There’s a lot to like that I didn’t mention because I feel saying much more than I already have will ruin how insane the film is. Despite being a mess, ‘Detention’ is mesmerizing and something you definitely won’t be able to take yours eyes off of.

SXSW ’11 REVIEW: ‘The Divide’ is “Terrifying and Bleak”

Earlier this week Anchor Bay pulled out the check book and spent over a million bucks on Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens’ The Divide, a tense post-apocalyptic thriller that takes to a NYC bunker where a group of apartment tenants fight to stay alive.

‘The Divide’ is a terrifying and bleak vision of the future whose performances and images will stick with you for days after you watch it. Gens’ direction and Laurent Barès cinematography create a moody, claustrophobic atmosphere that never feels stale despite its closed-quarters setting. The tone is vile and the characters devolve into sickening states of being, but the reality-based approach to Gens’ end of days makes for one of the best apocalyptic tales in quite a while.

SXSW ’11 REVIEW: ‘Kill List’ Successfully Builds to a Shocker

Just acquired last night by IFC Midnight was Ben Wheatley’s Kill List, an entry from the SXFantastic midnight series at SXSW. The pic is about a group of demobbed soldiers turned contract killers who run up against a devil-worshipping coven.

David Harley is running around like a madman at the Austin film festival checking out all of the premieres, and talking to the directors. Continuing our SXSW coverage we’ve just now added our review of Kill List, an uneven movie that carries quite a few surprises:

Kill List is a film that warrants a second viewing, if only to see how seemingly unrelated incidents connect in hindsight. On a first watch, however, Wheatley’s hit man horror is an atmospheric delight, boasting incredibly intense performances by Maskell and Smiley, and a doozy of an ending that will unhinge even the most hardened of genre fans.
