An Appropriate Friday the 13th Release for ‘Cabin the Woods’

Lionsgate has announced an April 13, 2012 release for Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods, his high-concept horror slasher starring Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams and Brian White.

Word on the street out of the film markets (Berlin and Cannes) is that the movie delivers quite a punch, and Lionsgate has to be happy that Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth is the lead.

Much like Cloverfield, which Goddard scripted, the Cabin story line provides a new twist on a classic scenario — in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope.

See ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ in First Ever Still!

One film I’ve been extremely skeptical about is Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods, his high-concept horror slasher that got caught in the middle of MGM’s financial debacle. While the delay doesn’t concern me a bit, it was the top secret script that I had read during filming. While I refuse to reveal a single bit of information, I will say this: everything depends on Goddard’s vision, his imagination, his ability to turn a super bizarre screenplay into a believable reality. Word on the street out of the film markets (Berlin and Cannes) is that the movie delivers quite a punch, and Lionsgate has to be happy that Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth is the lead. I hope we see this sooner than later…

ANYWAYS, Bloody Disgusting reader ‘Lichtbringer’ was kind enough to drop the first ever image in our lap. It features Hemsworth and company investigating something in said “cabin”. I can only assume it’s a stack of beer cans or a dirty condom, what else would be on the floor after a big time party?

Much like Cloverfield, which Goddard scripted, the Cabin story line provides a new twist on a classic scenario — in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope.

More Humor Injected Into ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ Poster Tease

I find it absolutely hilarious that nearly every single news story now carries Thor and star Chris Hemsworth’s name in the title, but the real focus should be on the “hype factor” that was diminished when MGM put the film (and its own company) in limbo.

Before getting exiled, “Lost” and Cloverfield director Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods 3D was shrouded in secrecy, called the “slasher to end all slasher films” and described as a new twist on a classic scenario — in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope. We personally know the film carries an array of creatures…so chew on that a bit.

Now that Lionsgate has acquired the film for a supposed October 28th release, it’s time to get the steam circulating once again. This weekend the official Twitter page posted a pretty hilarious new poster that punctuates the excitement behind Lionsgate’s new involvement.

Dig on the fun one sheet inside and watch for the new slasher starring Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth (joking!) in theaters October 28…

Sony to Distribute ‘Cabin in the Woods’ for MGM?

Some brief news that’s actually quite large considering the massive library of titled MGM owns. Variety reports that Sony has emerged as the last studio standing in the jockeying to make a deal for MGM’s distribution duties — including the 23rd James Bond pic. Paramount, Warner Bros. and Fox are all out of the running.

Studios had no comment Tuesday on reported details of a deal structure, but a person familiar with the situation told Variety that Sony and MGM are still hammering out particulars on a pact covering worldwide distribution of MGM titles and possible co-financing of upcoming films.

An overall distrib deal would also cover the two completed MGM titles, Red Dawn and The Cabin in the Woods (in post-converted 3-D!), as well as DVD and digital sales from MGM’s 4,000-title library (ahem, The Poughkeepsie Tapes).

Directed by Drew Goddard, the Cabin story line provides a new twist on a classic scenario — in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope. Rumors say that we’ll be seeing a horde of different creatures from werewolves to J-horror ghouls.
