While the first season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” tapped into our nostalgia sweet tooth, the second season is taking it even further. The talk over the past week is how the filmmakers were able to license the rights to use the Ghostbusters logo and costumes in the show. The result are the various photos of the “Stranger Things” kids rocking ‘busters gear during Halloween in October of 1984.
What was most interesting about the photos was the dialogue it created, making us all wonder what it would be like to see teenagers as Ghostbusters in a movie. A writer at Cinemablend had the same thought and was able to ask Ghostbusters star and producer Dan Aykroyd his thoughts on the matter. When asked if he could see the franchise turned into a live-action Netflix series, he responded:
“Yes. Absolutely. Sure. Sure. I can see several possibilities there. You know? Take a cue from these guys in ‘Stranger Things’ and maybe have the Ghostbusters in high school or something.”
One of the best things about the new Spider-Man movie was Peter Parker’s return to High School, something that has always worked for that franchise. With our culture hitting peak nostalgia and Netflix dumping tens of billions into productions, why not take the Ghostbusters franchise in a new direction, one that connects with all of our youth as well as newer audiences in love with shows like “Stranger Things”? The possibilities are endless with the Ghostbusters franchise, which clearly needs to find new life after last year’s flop.
