Brutal New Blomkamp Short ‘Gdansk’ Unleashes a Medieval Giant

One of the things we’re most thankful for in the genre space this year is Neill Blomkamp‘s (District 9, Chappie) Oats Studios, a bold new venture that has allowed Blomkamp to step outside the studio system and let his imagination run wild.

Incredible shorts like Rakka, Firebase and Zygote quickly put Oats Studios on the map as a studio worth paying close attention to, and Blomkamp unleashes another treat today.

The first in a series of shorts about medieval giants, Blomkamp’s Gdansk was inspired by the art of independent concept artist and illustrator Jakub Rozalski, and it shows us what happens when an ordinary man crosses a medieval monster.

Spoiler alert: things don’t end very well for the man.

    That left me feeling unsatisfied.

    • J Jett

      same here.

  • J Jett

completely stupid. these shorts have been getting worse and worse. i loved the first 4 or 5 shorts but all these new ones are just lousy.

    • Jeff Eastwood

Oats Studios started out great (Rakka, Firebase, even the Cooking with Bill series), but these CGI shorts are just so-so. More live action, please.

      • J Jett

        agreed 100%. 🙂

    • Baron Von Marlon

Thought they’re supposed to be long proof of concept trailers instead of actual short movies.

  • Cure4Humanity

    Well…that was odd.

  • Josh Blitzenbrox Myers

    Well that was…rather pointless

Hmmmm. It’s kinda like reading a novel starting with page 60. You’ve no idea about the character motivations. Why is there conflict between this man and the knights? These shorts are good on originality. Ill give him that. It just seemed like it was a pointless short. Unless, this is just showcasing animation for a feature, or a game.

  • RareWind

Rather pointless this one. Is this supposed to be just senseless killing or revenge? Without the backstory very difficult to understand what’s happening.

  • Jérémy Kuprowski

…And? That’s it? I mean, most (if not all) Oats shorts are meant to be trailers of some sort, but there’s always some kind of development, of story… of plot simply put.

It’s nice to see more Jakub Rozalski-inspired works, but it’s just so bare I feel like I wasted two minutes of my life.

Worst thing Oats churned out so far along with Praetoria and Fluke.

  • RawBeard

Big fan of the live action OATS studio efforts that first came out. The ones that acted out more like a Short film or a proof of concept/pitch video. The recent animated ones, whilst still imaginative doesn’t have the same effect on me. Plus breaking them up into different parts just seems to take away from the overall impact.

  • Bergmans Chris

Meh. Spoling a 2 minutes clip didn’t help the cause.

  • MrX13

Nice animation and visuals! Sucks to be killed like that but damn!!

  • Dave Brown

    Is this a game lol
