One of the worst comic book movies ever made is New Line Cinema’s Spawn (1997), an adaptation of Todd McFarlane‘s series of the same name that starred Michael Jai White as an elite mercenary who is killed, but comes back from Hell as a reluctant soldier of the Devil. While there are those who still enjoy the movie (all the power to ’em), one of them isn’t White.
Hiding within an interview over at THR, White strongly clarifies his disdain for the Mark A.Z. Dippé-directed adaptation that fizzles at the box office.
“There is no footage of me ever saying that I liked Spawn. I have never said that I thought that was a good movie,” White exclaimed.
It’s non-news, really, but it’s always interesting when an actor or filmmaker publicly denounce a piece of their work. No matter, “Spawn” has continued on in both comic and animated form, and now McFarlane is in pre-production on a brand new feature film adaptation set to shoot this fall with both Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner attached to star.
