For those of you who don’t read comics, Todd McFarlane is the artist behind the iconic look of Venom, the symbiote antagonist who originated in the “Amazing Spider-Man” comics. While the notable tongue design wasn’t integrated until Erik Larsen took over the comics, McFarlane introduced the world to the black and white villain that would become one of Spider-Man’s biggest foes.
McFarlane is a heavy social media user, often sharing updates on projects and insight into his universe. This past weekend, he took to Facebook to do a live critique of the Venom design from the forthcoming film adaptation, which stars Tom Hardy as the title character. What makes this video even cooler is that he actually tweaks the design as he’s explaining his thoughts.
While he thinks the character design is “cool”, he does note some things he’d change, including the shape and layout of the symbiote’s eyes (he would have pulled them up to increase the black area), and the curve of the smile (and how much teeth are showing). He notes that, by changing the teeth area, the filmmakers could have shown “more teeth” in animated sequences. Changes aside, he does love the hulking nature of the new look and seems overall enthused by the footage he’s seen.
This is a must see video for McFarlane fans:
