‘The New Mutants’ Trailer Coming in January, According to Director Josh Boone

Published

on

After collecting dust for the past two years, Fox’s dark, horror-tinged adaptation of The New Mutants could finally see the light of day.

Directed by Josh Boone, this X-Men spinoff has been trapped in the middle of the Fox-Disney merger and also executives who don’t share the same vision as the filmmakers. There have been rumors of reshoots, which I personally shot down, and the idea that the adaptation would eventually arrive directly on Hulu (or some other streaming service) was being floated around as well.

After the acquisition was approved, Disney had announced that they’ll release The New Mutants in theaters on April 3, 2020. With that came no confidence and no confirmations from anyone behind the scenes, while our own sources have continually confirmed the date.

With 2020 arriving in just over a week, the promotional window is here and fans have been asking, “Where’s the trailer?” Well, according to Boone, the brand new trailer is coming next month!

Below is a screencap from Instagram of an exchange between Boone and @NewMutantsUp in which the fan account asked where the trailer for New Mutants is. Boone replied, “Soooooon. January.”

In addition, New Mutants illustrator Bill Sienkiewicz appeared on the Fatman Beyond podcast with Kevin Smith, confirming he’s seen a work-in-progress trailer that Boone shared with him.

“I don’t know if I’m even allowed to mention any of this, but I will say that The New Mutants film, if you’ve heard anything about it the last couple years… two days ago, I heard from Josh Boone, the director. And he sent me a new trailer. They’ve been working on it, and it is phenomenal. I got chills. It looks like, because of the whole Disney-Fox merger, takeover, whatever… it’s got the blessings of Marvel. And it feels more Marvel in terms of what they’re doing, but also the horror elements of the film are in place.”

While the release plans are unclear, and Sienkiewicz echoes this, our own sources tell us that, as of this writing, a theatrical release is still planned. It’s a bit surprising considering all of the behind-the-scenes drama, but I can’t express how exciting this news is.

In the film, “five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.”

The cast includes Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a Sunspot, a mutant with the ability to absorb and channel solar power; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, the Native American telepath also known as “Mirage”; Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on; Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik, who uses teleportation; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; and Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane, who can turn into a wolf.

Here’s the original trailer from 2017.

‘Witchblade’ is Getting Resurrected This Summer in New Comic Series from Top Cow and Image Comics

Witchblade, the popular comic series that initially ran from 1995 to 2015 and launched a TV series, is getting resurrected in a new comic series from Top Cow and Image Comics. It’s set to unleash heavy metal, black magic and blood this summer.

Look for the new Witchblade series to launch on July 17, 2024.

In Witchblade #1, “New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini’s life was forever fractured by her father’s murder. Cold, cunning, and hellbent on revenge, Sara now stalks a vicious criminal cabal beneath the city, where an ancient power collides and transforms her into something wild, magnificent, and beyond her darkest imaginings. How will Sara use this ancient power, or will she be consumed by it?”

The series is penned by NYT Best-Selling writer Marguerite Bennett (AnimosityBatwomanDC Bombshells) and visualized by artist Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide SquadPower RangersRed Sonja). The creative duo is working with original co-creator Marc Silvestri, who is the CEO of Top Cow Productions Inc. and one of the founders of Image Comics. They are set to reintroduce the series to Witchblade’s enduring fans with “a reimagined origin with contemporary takes on familiar characters and new story arcs that will hook new readers and rekindle the energy and excitement that fueled the 90’s Image Revolution that shaped generations of top creators.”

Bennett said in a statement, “The ability to tell a ferocious story full of monsters, sexuality, vision, and history was irresistible.” She adds, “Our saga is sleek, vicious, ferocious, and has a lot to say about power in the 21st century and will be the first time that we are stopping the roller coaster to let more people on. I’ve loved Witchblade since I was a child, and there is truly no other heroine like Sara with such an iconic legacy and such a rich, brutal relationship to her own body.”

“The Witchblade universe is being modernized to reflect how Marguerite beautifully explores the extreme sides of Sara through memories, her personal thoughts, like desire and hunger, in her solitude and when she is possessed by the Witchblade. So, I had to visually intersect a noir True Detective-like world with a supernatural, horror world that is a fantastic mix between Berserk and Zodiac,” Cafaro stated.

Marc Silvestri notes, “This is brand new mythology around Sara, and I can’t wait for you to fall in love with her and all the twists and turns. Discover Witchblade reimagined this summer, and join us as we bring all the fun of the 90s to the modern age and see how exciting comics can be. I can’t wait for you to read this new series.”
