No More Cryptkeeper: EC Comics Reveals New Horror Hosts for This Year’s Revival

Founded by Max Gaines in 1944 and taken over by son William Gaines later that decade, EC Comics is one of the most legendary names in horror, known for their series’ Tales from the CryptThe Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear. Eighty years after the company came onto the scene, we learned earlier this year, EC Comics is coming back from the dead.

Oni Press has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. to launch a line of all-new horror comics, and a report from The Wrap today reveals their new roster of horror hosts.

Gone are the Crypt Keeper, the Old Witch and the Vault Keeper, being replaced by new hosts for a new generation. The Wrap reveals in their exclusive report today, “The three hosts, designed by artist Dustin Weaver, are the Grave-Digger, the Tormentor and the Grim Inquisitor.”

“What we’ve tried to do … is figure out how we create new horror hosts who aren’t Xeroxed facsimiles of the original trio,” Oni president and publisher Hunter Gorinson tells the site, “in the same way that we’re trying to create books that exist in a spiritual lineage with the original EC canon without directly replicating it or creating some sort of nostalgic simulacrum.”

Epitaphs From the Abyss is the title of the very first horror series from the relaunched EC Comics label, and it’s releasing in July. Cruel Universe will follow in August.

Head over to The Wrap for the full preview of the upcoming EC Comics revival.
