‘Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls’ Gets Sequel Comic ‘Fables of the Fortuitous’

Published

on

The adventure that began in Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls will continue in Fables of the Fortuitous, a comic book that serves as a direct sequel to the horror-comedy film.

Onyx the Fortuitous writer-director-star Andrew Bowser is collaborating on the five-issue miniseries with writer Joan Ford (“ThunderCats Roar”).

Due out in Summer 2026, you can pre-order the digital bundle for $15 or a set of physical copies for $40, among other perks, via Kickstarter.

With covers by Declan Shalvey, Marianna Ignazzi, Lukas Ketner, Luke Sparrow, and Will Robson, each issue will follow Onyx on an adventure with different member of Bartok manor:

Fables of the Fortuitous #1 – “Brotherhood of the Wolf”

Mr. Duke is hosting his first “Taming Your Inner-Wolf” class at the manor and Onyx will be serving as his teacher’s aide! The group of nerdy, young dudes who show up for the class seem basically harmless — until the full moon rises and they transform into a pack of asshole, werewolf frat bros! The Wolf-Bros quickly take over the manor and claim it as their brand new frat house. Can Mr. Duke and Onyx put an end to their juvenile/murderous antics before they lose their
home?

Fables of the Fortuitous #2 – “Prelude to a Hisssss”

Jesminder has requested a suitor — an ancient snake deity named Glycon. After an odd courting ritual, the couple decide to marry. Now Onyx has to get the manor ready for a wedding; fulfilling the dietary requirements of a hundred different demons, making sure the seating arrangements don’t set off any wars between the realms, and helping pick out dresses that will look good on both human and demon bridesmaids. But when he discovers that Glycon is only marrying Jesminder to steal her powers, he has to find a way to convince Jesminder to call the union!

Fables of the Fortuitous #3 – “Onyx’s Day Out”

In a bid to reclaim control of the manor, Farrah and Bartok cast a spell that turns Onyx into a baby, thinking it will make him easier to kill. But Baby Onyx turns out to be quite the handful! They end up chasing the little bugger around the manor grounds and running into all sorts of painful, supernatural predicaments!

Fables of the Fortuitous #4 – “In the Land of the Battlekatts”

Shelley has been trying to give Onyx lessons in the ways of the warrior, but he’s not the best student. The only combat he’s interested in is with his Battlekatt action figures and play sets. But when the manor’s magic shrinks both of them down to action figure size and brings Onyx’s massive toy collection to life, Onyx will have to find the warrior within or he could end up dying in the Land of the Battlekatts!

Fables of the Fortuitous #5 – “Eat the Parents”

Onyx’s mom and Todd are coming over for dinner at the manor and Onyx wants the evening to be perfect — especially since this will be their official introduction to his first official partner, Mack. But that same day Mack accidentally gets possessed by an ancient, soul sucking demon! Now Onyx has to keep the evening running smoothly while Mack is puking up bile, spinning their head, and levitating ten feet above the table. It turns out Todd thinks this version of Mack rules. Will Onyx let Mack stay possessed forever just to impress Todd?

Released by Screambox in 2023, Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls follows Onyx the Fortuitous as he joins his idol, Bartok the Great, along with his mysterious delegation to raise the spirit of an ancient demon for a once-in-a-lifetime ritual.

‘Exhuma’ Prequel Spinoff Webtoon ‘Maengjong’ Debuts This Weekend

Hwarim and Bonggil (Kim Go-eun and Lee Do-hyun) in Exhuma

The supernatural world of Korean folk horror movie Exhuma grows larger with the arrival of prequel spinoff webtoon Maengjong this weekend, Variety reports today.

Naver Webtoon debuts Maengjong on May 30.

The series hails from Haemuri (Olgami) and will trace the high school origins of how shaman duo Hwarim and Bonggil, played by Kim Go-eun and Lee Do-hyun in the 2024 film, came together to face occultish threats.

The story is set to begin when “Hwarim, who has been concealing her identity following a childhood encounter with a snake spirit called Jin, crosses paths with Bonggil at their school.”

Variety notes that Exhuma director Jang Jae-hyun participated in the project’s early concept stage.

“We are presenting ‘Maengjong,’ a new series capturing the appeal of the horror-occult genre, ahead of the full summer season,” said Lee Jeong-geun, Naver Webtoon’s Korea webtoon content leader. “With the high school story of Hwarim and Bonggil, who left a strong impression in the film ‘Exhuma,’ enhanced by Haemuri’s characteristic tense direction, we expect it will be a welcome work for genre fans.”

“It is meaningful that the spin-off story of ‘Exhuma,’ loved by many audiences, expands by meeting the new grammar of webtoon,” said Lee Hyeon-jeong, managing director of the film business division at Showbox, which distributed the film. “We hope it will be a fresh experience for both film fans and webtoon readers.”

Exhuma was a breakout hit in 2024, becoming the first Korean occult film to surpass 10 million ticket buyers and the country’s highest-grossing film of the year. I wrote in my review that “the intricately woven Exhuma delivers one of the year’s biggest surprises in horror so far.”

The bond between Hwarim and Bonggil was one of the film’s highlights, making this prequel webtoon a must for fans.
