“Good Morning” – Graduation
Someone once told me that a “rapper is only as good as the samples he spins.” In ‘Good Morning,’ Kanye samples not only from Sir Elton John, but he samples from one of Elton’s most profound songs, ‘Someone Saved My Life Tonight.’ The appropriate way to use someone else’s tune in your music is to make it your own without masking the original intent. In both ‘Good Morning’ and ‘Someone Saved My Live Tonight,’ when you hear the wooooo’s come in, the songs take a different tone immediately, and although they have such intrinsically different emotions, they are both haunting, and Kanye never lost that singular feeling when he used the short wooooo sample for this song. It’s a dark song that shows some of Kanye’s finer sides as an artist and lyricist. *Side note, in case you haven’t seen the video, Japanese artist/god Takashi Murakami illustrates it and it’s beyond stunning.
