Cloverfield – Marlena Goes Pop!
Some of you may claim that this isn’t technically a horror film, especially after many of you cried foul when I included Godzilla on a list of disappointing horror movies, but I strongly beg to differ about this one. I’m a huge fan of Cloverfield, and despite its PG-13 rating I think it’s a very effective film. Marlena’s bursting death is something that legitimately shocked me when I saw it in theaters in 2008, and to this day it remains a death that I can’t bring myself to watch. I get a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach and it actively makes me queasy. I’m not sure if it’s the manner in which she dies, or the fact that I just really like Lizzy Caplan (or some combination of the two), but a kill scene in a horror movie that can make me feel that uncomfortable simply must be added to a list of my favorite horror deaths.
What do you guys think? I confess, I was born in 1989 and while I have seen many horror movies that came out before then, I was hard pressed to find really memorable death scenes from horror films not included in the 4 main franchises I mentioned at the beginning of this post (though the canoe scene in The Burning almost made the cut). What are some of your favorite horror deaths? Sound off in the comments below!
