Candyman (1992)
Ah Candyman, how I wanted to love you. Candyman was a movie that I simply saw too late in life (I was 23). Had I seen it when I was younger (or been old enough to see it when it came out in 1992), maybe I would have more of an appreciation for it. I actually love the story and script of Candyman. Something about the execution just didn’t work for me. The film feels a lot longer than it actually is (99 minutes), and it’s mostly just watching Helen (Virginia Madsen) walk around and make way too many bad decisions (just stop investigating!). Of course Phillip Glass’ score is fantastic, but it can’t stop the movie from feeling drawn out and dull. To top things off, Candyman the film and Candyman the character just aren’t very scary, which is the worst crime a horror film can commit.
