5 Iconic Bird Scenes in Horror

Apparently today is National Bird Day. Honestly, I didn’t even know such a holiday existed but I guess it makes total sense. I mean, my birthday is supposedly National Pink Day, so if a day can be devoted to colors then it damn sure can be devoted to birds, which are infinitely cooler than the color pink. Some have talons, which immediately sends their score skyrocketing.

To celebrate this random holiday, I decided to bring forth five iconic horror scenes that involve birds, be they good or evil. Check out my five below and enjoy!

If I’m missing a terribly obvious choice, definitely let me know in the comments!

The Crow

Let’s open up with a movie that is all about the importance of a bird in your life. I picked this particular scene for a few reasons:
1) It’s got Tony Todd, the Candyman himself.
2) Michael Wincott’s “Quick impression for you: Caw! Caw! BANG! FUCK, I’M DEAD!” is one of my favorite lines in a movie ever.
3) It’s just an awesome scene that finally brings the protagonist and antagonist together after tons of slaughter and carnage.

Resident Evil: Extinction

This is the first true reveal of just how strong Alice’s powers are. Yeah, we saw her give a guy a serious nosebleed in Apocalypse and she did the whole Empire Strikes Back “everything is floating when I’m not paying attention” thing but THIS is when she goes full on ballistic. I mean, she sets fire to the goddamn sky!

I Spit On Your Grave

I couldn’t find the clip of it but if you’ve seen this movie you know just how efficient birds can be when used as a method of torture. It gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

28 Days Later

This is probably the most emotionally devastating scene on this list and, quite possibly, in recent horror. I love Brendan Gleeson as an actor, so seeing him turn was already hard enough. But having him do it in front of his daughter as he’s desperately trying to tell her that he loves her while maintaining a safe distance is just heartbreaking.

The Birds

How could this not be on the list? This is the iconic killer bird movie and nothing else can come close to comparing. This scene stands out for me because of the tension that builds as Tippi Hedren sits and smokes as the monkey bars behind her begin filling up with crows and ravens is so thick you could cut it with a knife…or puncture it with a beak. HAHAHA I’ll see myself out.
