What Are Your Favorite Adult-Aimed Animated Films?

Disclaimer: No, this post isn’t about hentai or porn, so get your mind out of the gutter.

Since the passing of Robert Balser, I found myself wanting to revisit the 1981 sci-fi/horror animated film Heavy Metal, a film that I hadn’t seen in several years. I tracked it down and saw it with nearly fresh eyes, not really forgetting each segment but also not remember the cleverness and absolute wit behind the film.

And that got me thinking about the great many animated films that are purposefully meant to be NOT for children. Films that incorporated sex, violence, drugs, gore, and whatever else to appeal to a more adult audience. After all, just because a movie is a “cartoon” doesn’t mean it can’t be incredibly twisted!

So, without further ado, I want to share some of my favorite animated films that are as much for adults as they are for kids. And some are meant just for adults, no matter what the filmmakers want you to believe!

After reading mine, do me a favor and let me know some of your favorites in the comments!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I don’t care what anyone says, this movie is incredibly fucked up and twisted. From the terrifying concept of “The Dip” to the overt sexuality of Jessica Rabbit to the alcohol and violence, this movie would absolutely get a PG-13 if not possible R rating in today’s day and age. Plus, as a wee little child, I remember this movie giving me nightmare fuel for days.

Paranorman

When a movie says “From the makers of Coraline“, you already know you’re in store for something completely abnormal (no pun intended). And while this movie aimed itself as a kids movie, there were so many disturbing images and concepts that I’m amazed it got a PG rating!

Vampire Hunter D

Yes, I included this on my favorite horror anime list from a couple years back but it has to make another appearance. I fucking LOVE this movie, okay? Having grown up playing and adoring the Castlevania games on the NES, this movie was right up my alley and it’s still something I love coming back to and revisiting on a regular basis.

Heavy Metal

The whole point of this article right here. After rewatching it recently, I was blown away by how goddamn funny and entertaining this movie is. I would talk more about it but, to be completely honest with you, I’m working on a piece specifically talking about this movie, so I’ll save all my thoughts for that!
