Drag Me to Hell
We’ve talked about Drag Me to Hell a lot here at Bloody Disgusting. Jonathan just wrote a piece about its ending back in January and it was actually the subject of the first piece I ever wrote for this site. That being said, it deserves another mention because that ending is bleak. It seems to be a popular opinion among viewers that Christine (Alison Lohman) deserved to go to Hell just for sacrificing her cat. I will never understand that opinion, but don’t think I don’t love animals. I’ve got an adorable 12 pound chihuahua mix that I would probably take a bullet for, but if it came down to it I would find some small animal to sacrifice (a chicken, perhaps?) so that I wouldn’t have to go to Hell. Unfortunately that sacrifice does not save Christine, and the film ends with her being dragged to hell. Watching the flesh burn off of her face is a truly haunting image.
Rosemary’s Baby
Poor Rosemary (Mia Farrow) was just tortured in Roman Polanski’s masterpiece, wasn’t she? She gets raped by Satan and then tormented by a creepy old hag (Ruth Gordon, who won an Academy Award for her role) before finally giving birth to Satan’s spawn. Add to that the fact that her husband (John Cassavetes) arranged the whole thing just so he could become famous and you’ve got the makings of a really shitty life. She even decides to keep the baby and raise it as her own! I know its a great movie and all, but that is one frustrating ending.
