From a Buick 8
Dream Director: Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Parallel Monsters)
King has said that this book is largely about people’s insistence and need for answers and logic when sometimes there simply isn’t one. Case in point, an other-dimensional car that’s not a car, but in fact a conduit for some sort of otherworldly monster. This is far more complicated and saying a whole lot more than King’s other “haunted car” tale, Christine. The thing that gets me every time about From A Buick 8 is the marvelous structure that King employs to tell this story. The novel begins at the end, more or less, with a bunch of state troopers recalling old, troubling encounters with the mysterious Buick 8. As a result there’s very much an atmosphere of ghost stories being told around the campfire, with the Buick 8 getting fleshed out increasingly with each new tale. This sort of idea would translate perfectly to an anthology horror film (or series) where each story is revolving around the Buick. You could even bring in different directors if you wanted to highlight varying sensibilities of the entity’s horror in each story.
Both George A. Romero and Tobe Hooper were at one point attached to direct an adaptation of this, but both instances ended up falling apart before production could begin. In spite of their visions not coming together, someone like Nacho Vigalondo could bring the right sort of mystery and existential fear to the project. He even has experience playing around with alternate dimensions.
