Exclusive First Look at EC Comics’ First-Ever Serialized Horror Comic ‘Blood Type’

Published

on

Recently resurrected by Oni Press, EC Comics will launch its first-ever serialized horror comic with Blood Type.

The first issue in the four-part series will be published on June 11, and Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive first look at the cover variants below.

Rising from the pages of last fall’s Epitaphs from the Abyss #3, bon vivant bloodsucker Ada is the first character to claw its way out of an EC anthology story and into a standalone series from one of the most influential names in terror.

Blood Type is written by Corinna Bechko (Green Lantern: Earth One, Star Wars: Legacy) and illustrated by Eisner Award winner Andrea Sorrentino (Gideon Falls, Old Man Logan). It features coloring by Dave Stewart and lettering by Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith.

A cunning vampire with nothing left to lose, Ada’s misdeeds have landed her on the doorstep of an idyllic Caribbean resort teeming with wealthy tourists and superstitious locals — an ample food supply for the thirsty vamp looking to get away from it all.

But as Ada stalks the boundaries of her new hunting ground, she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse by moonlight as an older, wiser, and entirely different kind of predator reveals its own carnal hunger for greed and power.

The first issue features variant covers by Sorrentino, Miguel Mercado (The Neighbors), Albert Monteys (Slaughterhouse-Five), Patricia Martin (G.I. Joe), and Kyle Hotz (The Hood).

“As is to be expected, Andrea Sorrentino is delivering a master class in comic book horror with his jaw-dropping work on Blood Type #1 – a truly historic debut issue that holds the unique distinction of being the first issue to ever continue a story out of the pages of a tried-and-true EC anthology short,” said Hunter Gorinson, President & Publisher of Oni Press.

“Paired with the brutally horrific and piercing hilarious script of Corinna Bechko – who has proven her ability to understand what makes an EC story tick on a near-cellular level as one of the central writers behind Epitaphs from the Abyss and Cruel Universe Blood Type will at last answer the (literally) immortal question: We may be scared of vampires … but what kind of monster could possibly make a vampire break out in a cold sweat?”

Experience the throat-ripping short story that set the horror in motion with Blood Type #0 on May 3 as part of Free Comic Book Day. It recollects Ada’s first appearance in Epitaphs from the Abyss alongside other EC stories from Cruel Universe and Cruel Kingdom.

IDW Dark and Paramount recently joined forces to launch limited comic book tales set in the worlds of Smile and A Quiet Place, and we’ve learned today that they’ll continue hanging around in those franchise universes with two brand new limited series tales.

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively revealed this afternoon that IDW Dark’s Any Given Smile debuts in September, while A Quiet Place: Rising Tides arrives in November.

First up, from writer Stephanie Williams and artist Pablo CollarAny Given Smile puts a football-themed twist on Parker Finn’s successful Smile movie franchise.

The five-part limited series is “set in January 1995, during the American Arena League football championship game in St. Augustine, Florida. The rising superstar of the Sharks, backup quarterback Dupree, is feeling the pressure from his teammates, the fans, and also the city’s gambling underworld, to whom he owes a considerable debt. Meanwhile, a sports journalist investigates a string of suicides that may be connected to the big game. At the very least, they are connected to a sinister entity that preys on the minds of its victims.”

From writer Declan Shalvey and artist Luke SparrowA Quiet Place: Rising Tides will also be a five-issue limited story. The comic book tale “brings the creatures to the Florida Keys, where a father-daughter duo attempt to survive on water in a houseboat.”

EW further details, “This tense family reunion coincides with the arrival of the vicious creatures that hunt through sound. Grace and her dad find safety on the open ocean, but she’ll have to make landfall sooner or later; the father’s oxygen tank and their supplies are running low, while a hurricane swiftly approaches.”
