There’s Something in the Fields in ‘The Whistler’ Clip with Diane Guerrero [Exclusive]

A distant whistle in a towering cane field signals that Diane Guerrero (“Doom Patrol,” “Orange Is the New Black”) isn’t alone in our exclusive clip from The Whistler.

Based on the Venezuelan legend El Silbón, the supernatural folk horror film opens in select theaters on April 17 via Vertical.

After their daughter’s death, a grieving couple inherits a remote Venezuelan farm occupied by a mysterious cult who claim to summon spirits. Desperate for one last connection, Nicole joins their rituals — awakening The Whistler, an entity whose chilling whistle signals death.

Juan Pablo Raba (“Narcos”) also stars. Indhira Serrano, Laureano Olivarez, Laura Sofía Domínguez, and Laura Garcia Marulanda round out the cast.

Diego Velasco (“Orange Is the New Black”) directs from a script he co-wrote with Esteban Orozco (“El Chapo”) and Carolina Paiz (“Orange Is the New Black”), based on an earlier screenplay by Nacho Palacios.

“In Latin America, the landscape that stuns you by day becomes something else entirely at night,” Velasco tells Bloody Disgusting. “Sugarcane fields are deceptive — the deeper you go, the darker it gets, and those sharp leaves don’t discriminate. For this sequence, I wanted Nicole to make a choice that felt completely reasonable… and then make sure she couldn’t take it back.”

Margaret Miller & Trevor O’Neil of Hideout Pictures (Old Henry) produce alongside Velasco.
