Each week here at Bloody Disgusting we like to highlight some of the new Blu-ray releases hitting shelves across the world. Please note that this isn’t every release for the week, just a few of the ones that jumped out at us.

First week of May releases and we’ve got some good ones! Not as much “horror” this week, but still plenty to choose from. Kino Lorber has some great releases this week with Steel Justice the one I’m most interested in. Australian has the most intriguing releases though with The Seventh Sign and Enemy Mine! Get out there and pick up some physical media!

US Releases

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Warner Archive, Region Free)

Synopsis:
Martha and her professor husband, George, invite a younger couple for drinks after a faculty party.

The 5th Wave (Sony, Region A)

Synopsis:
16-year-old Cassie Sullivan tries to survive in a world devastated by the waves of an alien invasion that has already decimated the population and knocked mankind back to the Stone Age.

Top Gun – 30th Anniversary Steelbook (Paramount, Region A)

Synopsis:
Top Gun takes a look at the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy’s prestigious fighter weapons school. Maverick Mitchell is a daring young flyer who’s out to become the best of the best.

Easy Rider (Criterion, Region A)

Synopsis:
After scoring cocaine in Mexico, then re-selling it in California, two bikers set off on a cross- country trek to New Orleans.

City Heat (Warner, Region A)

Synopsis:
Kansas City in the 1930s, private investigator Mike Murphy’s partner is brutally murdered when he tries to blackmail a mobster with his secret accounting records. When a rival gang boss goes after the missing records, ex-policeman Murphy is forced to team up again with his ex-partner Lieutenant Speer, even though they can’t stand each other, to fight both gangs before KC erupts in a mob war.

True Crime (Warner, Region A)

Synopsis:
Steve Everett is an Oakland journalist recovering from alcoholism, who is assigned to cover the execution of convicted murderer Frank Beechum. Everett discovers that Beechum might be innocent, but has only a few hours to prove his theory and save Beechum’s life.

Independence Day – 20th Anniversay Ultimate Collector’s Edition (Fox, Region A)

Synopsis:
It is an ordinary summer day. But then, without warning, something very extraordinary happens. Enormous shadows fall across the land. Strange atmospheric phenomena, ominous and mesmerizing, surface around the globe. All eyes turn upward. The question of whether we’re alone in the universe has finally been answered. And, in a matter of minutes, the lives of every person across the globe are forever changed. With the fate of our planet at stake, the Fourth of July is about to take on an entirely new meaning. No longer will it be an American holiday. It will be known as the day the entire world fought back. The day we did not go gentle into the good night… The day all of us on planet Earth celebrated our independence day.

A Kiss Before Dying (Kino Lorber, Region A)

Synopsis:
A ruthless college student resorts to murder in a futile attempt to marry an heiress.

Assassination (Kino Lorber, Region A)

Synopsis:
Jay Killion had been the presidential bodyguard, but for the inauguration of the recently elected president, he is assigned to the first lady, Lara Royce Lara, a perpetually indignant, arrogantly feministic lady, initially hates the methodical and rules-following Killion, and so she does all she can to avoid him and disregard his safety procedures. The story complicates, however, when repeated attempts are made on Lara’s life. Eventually, the shaken Lara decides to trust Killion’s instincts and precautionary methods, and the pair embark on a difficult and often perilous cross-country journey, with the assassins close on their heels.

Steel Justice (Kino Lorber, Region A)

Synopsis:
John Steele is a Vietnam Vet who’s had trouble adjusting to life after the war. He hasn’t been able to hold on to a job which includes being a cop. When his best friend, Lee who also served with him in Vietnam, and who also became a cop was killed by some drug dealers he was investigating. Steele was able to save his daughter and saw one of the shooters. He later sees him and learns that he is the son of General Kwan, another person he served with in Vietnam who was running his own deals on the side, and who tried to kill Steele and Lee but Steele not only survived but thwarted his last plan. Steele suspects Kwan is involved with Lee’s death but unfortunately Kwan’s a respected member of the community. And Steele’s former boss Bennett is not in a rush to find the killers cause investigation reveals that Lee may have been dirty which Steele knows is not true. Steele sets out to prove Lee’s innocence and to get Kwan.

Sharkansas Women’s Prison Massacre (Scream Factory, Region A)

Synopsis:
When a fracking environmental accident rips apart the earth’s crust, the resulting hole lets out prehistoric sharks from underground. The sharks target a group of women and trap them in a cabin.

Trailer Trauma 2: Drive-In Monsterama (Garagehouse Pictures, Region Free)

Synopsis:
TRAILER TRAUMA was only the beginning – now you must prepare yourself as a fresh assault of gruesome ghouls leaps off of the screen and into the driver’s seat! Submerged (Scream Factory, Region A)

Synopsis:
A young woman and her friends, who’ve been targeted by kidnappers, must do everything they can to survive after their limo is forced off the road and plunged into a canal.

Blade II (Zavvi Steelbook, Region B)

Synopsis:
Blade forms an uneasy alliance with the vampire council in order to combat the Reaper vampires who feed on vampires.

Blade Trinity (Zavvi Steelbook, Region B)

Synopsis:
Deep in a remote desert, vampire leaders are resurrecting Dracula, the horrific creature who spawned their race. Now known as Drake, this awesome vampire has unique powers that allow him to exist in daylight. To make things even more difficult for Blade, the vampiric leadership launches a smear campaign against him, targeting him as a murderous monster and sendingthe FBI after him. After Blade and his mentor, Whistler, have an explosive showdown with FBI agent Cumberland and hismen, it’s evident that the Daywalker will need some assistance. Blade reluctantly teams up with the Nightstalkers, a group of human vampire hunters led by Whistler’s beautiful daughter, Abigail, and the wisecracking Hannibal King. Synopsis:

Enemy Mine (Umbrella Entertainment, Region Free)

Synopsis:
A soldier from Earth crash-lands on an alien world after sustaining battle damage. Eventually he encounters another survivor, but from the enemy species he was fighting; they band together to survive on this hostile world.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Via Vision Entertainment, Region B)

Synopsis:
After a psychotic Air Force general unleashes an ingenious, foolproof and irrevocable scheme sending bombers to attack the Soviet Union, the U.S. President phones the Soviet premier in a desperate effort to save the world.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Cineme Cult, Region B)

Synopsis:
Journalist Raoul Duke and his lawyer Dr. Gonzo drive from LA to Las Vegas on a drugs binge. They nominally cover news stories, including a convention on drug abuse, but also sink deeper into a frightening psychedelic otherworld. As Vietnam, Altamont and the Tate killings impinge from the world of TV news, Duke and Gonzo see casinos, reptiles and the American dream.

Ghosts of the Abyss (Via Vision Entertainment, Region B)

Synopsis:
James Cameron and Bill Paxton, director and actor of the 1997 film Titanic, travel to the final undersea resting place of the fated ship of dreams.

Chris Coffel is originally from Phoenix, AZ and now resides in Portland, OR. He once scored 26 goals in a game of FIFA. He likes the Phoenix Suns, Paul Simon and 'The 'Burbs.' Oh and cats. He also likes cats.

Gateway Horror Classic ‘The Gate’ Returns to Life With Blu-ray SteelBook in May

One of my personal favorite horror movies of all time, 1987’s gateway horror classic The Gate is opening back up on May 14 with a brand new Blu-ray SteelBook release from Lionsgate!

The new release will feature fresh SteelBook artwork from Vance Kelly, seen below.

When best friends Glen (Stephen Dorff) and Terry (Louis Tripp) stumble across a mysterious crystalline rock in Glen’s backyard, they quickly dig up the newly sodden lawn searching for more precious stones.
