MVD Acquires Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Subterranea’

Published

MVD Entertainment Group has acquired all North American distribution rights for the sci-fi thriller Subterranea. The film marks the directorial debut of Matthew Miller, who was inspired by the 1997 concept album “Subterranea” from progressive British rock band IQ.

The trailer looks interesting and reminds me of Pig. Not sure how many people now Pig, but it’s a fantastic film from 2011 about a man who can’t remember who he is or where he came from. Judging from the trailer Subterranea looks to deal with very similar themes. At least that’s my take away. The below synopsis provides some more details and paints a clearer picture.

The important thing here though is the case because it includes Bug Hall and Bug Hall was in a lot of movies I loved as a kid, specifically The Little Rascals, The Big Green and The Stupids. Joining Bug is the incredible William Katt and the two-time Emmy nominated Nicholas Turturro. So the cast is good, the trailer looks intriguing and I know nothing about this rock band that inspired it. Maybe it’ll be ok. Regardless there’s enough here that I’m willing to give it a chance.

Subterranea will debut on Digital, VOD, DVD and Blu-ray on September 13, 2016 from MVD Entertainment Group. Special Features included on the disc include two behind the scenes featurettes “The Making of Subterranea” and “On the Set of Subterranea – Timelapses, deleted scenes and the original theatrical trailer.”

Synopsis:
Subterranea stars Bug Hall as “The Captive”, who was locked in a dark cell as a small child and was raised in complete isolation, never seeing daylight or even another human being. Over twenty years later, without warning, he is released into society with nothing but the clothes on his back. Determined to find out who he is, The Captive discovers that he’s the centerpiece of a dangerous orchestrated sociological experiment and sets off to find the truth about his shadowed existence, ultimately leading to a thrilling confrontation with his maker, “The Provider” (William Katt).

Chris Coffel is originally from Phoenix, AZ and now resides in Portland, OR. He once scored 26 goals in a game of FIFA. He likes the Phoenix Suns, Paul Simon and 'The 'Burbs.' Oh and cats. He also likes cats.

Get ready for double the fun, protagonists, and body count when Ready or Not 2: Here I Come explodes on streaming next week.

Just in time for the fireworks, the sequel makes its streaming debut on Hulu and Disney+ on July 2.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett are back, along with Samara Weaving, for more hide and slay mayhem.

Picking up moments after the all-out attack from the Le Domas family in the first Ready or Not movie, Grace (Weaving) discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game — and this time with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) at her side. Grace has one chance to survive, keep her sister alive, and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.

That means a higher body count and even more explosive carnage. Just how much? A whopping 325 gallons worth, the directors previously told BD.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, David Cronenberg, Elijah Wood, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng, Varun Saranga, and Daniel Beirne also star.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “More is more in Ready or Not 2. Bigger stakes, larger playing field, a higher (and more gruesome) body count, and even double the protagonists. It’s all designed to deliver maximum crowd-pleasing fun.”

The horror-comedy sequel is written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.
