New to Blu – Week of 5/17/2016
Each week here at Bloody Disgusting we like to highlight some of the new Blu-ray releases hitting shelves across the world. Please note that this isn’t every release for the week, just a few of the ones that jumped out at us.
Not a huge week of releases, but some good stuff. The Witch is the big one and rightfully so, but some good stuff from Arrow, Scream Factory and Kino Lorber worth checking out.
US Releases
The Witch (Lionsgate, Region A)
Synopsis:
A devoutly Christian family in 1630’s New England, struggles to survive living along the edge of a vast wilderness. When one of their five children goes missing and their life-sustaining crops fail, they fall victim to paranoia and fear as they begin to turn on one another. The decimation of their family unit creates an opportunity for incredible evil to emerge and attempt to destroy them all.
Dark Passage (Warner Archive, Region A)
Synopsis:
A man convicted of murdering his wife escapes from prison and works with a mysterious woman to try and prove his innocence.
I Saw What You Did (Scream Factory, Region A)
Synopsis:
“Don’t laugh little girl Better run for your life. The man you just talked to Has just murdered his wife!” When two teenagers make prank phone calls to strangers, they become the target for terror when they whisper “I saw what you did” to a psychopath who has just murdered his wife. I SAW WHAT YOU DID features a cavalcade of William Castle-style shocks, plus a gloriously over-the-top performance by Joan Crawford as the killer’s desperately amorous neighbor. Producer/director William Castle, known as Hollywood’s Greatest Showman, had theaters showing the film equipped with special “Shock Sections” for faint-of-heart patrons, and proudly boasted that the movie instigated a nationwide epidemic of crank calls by America’s teens.
Candy (Kino Lorber, Region A)
Synopsis:
Based on Terry Southern’s satirical novel, a sendup of Voltaire’s ‘Candide’. Young Candy is a high school girl who seeks truth and meaning in life, encountering a variety of kookie characters and humorous sexual situations in the process.
Hired to Kill (Arrow, Region A)
Synopsis:
Frank Ryan is a soldier of fortune hired by a powerful organisation to infiltrate a volatile Mid East country. His job will be to locate jailed rebel leader Petros Rallis, then free him – or kill him.
Killer Force (Kino Lorber, Region A)
Synopsis:
A heist force attempts to rob the diamond mine facility.
Dementia (Shout Factory/IFC, Region A)
Synopsis:
After being diagnosed with Dementia, an elderly war veteran is forced by his estranged family to hire a live-in nurse, only to find she harbors a sinister secret.
UK Releases
Creed (Zavvi Steelbook, Region B)
Synopsis:
A story that finds Rocky Balboa acting as a trainer and mentor to the son of his friend and greatest rival, Apollo Creed.
Hired to Kill (Arrow, Region B)
Synopsis:
Frank Ryan is a soldier of fortune hired by a powerful organisation to infiltrate a volatile Mid East country. His job will be to locate jailed rebel leader Petros Rallis, then free him – or kill him.
I Am Wrath (101 Films, Region B)
Synopsis:
Unemployed engineer Stanley Hill (John Travolta) witnesses the murder of his wife Vivian (Rebecca De Mornay), who was attacked by thugs in a parking garage. Wracked with guilt, Stanley is haunted by the image of Vivian dying in his arms. When Detective Gibson (Sam Trammell) and other corrupt police officers are unable to bring the killers to justice, Stanley turns to his old friend Dennis (Christopher Meloni) and decides to take matters into his own hands. It is only then that Stanley and Dennis are found to have a mysterious past that, until now, they have kept very well hidden. As they inflict their revenge, those involved in the cover up realise that Stanley and Dennis are more dangerous than they could ever have imagined…
Childhood’s End: Season One (Universal, Region B)
Synopsis:
After peaceful aliens invade earth, humanity finds itself living in a utopia under the indirect rule of the aliens, but does this utopia come at a price?
Mojave (Signature Entertainment, Region B)
Synopsis:
A suicidal artist goes into the desert, where he finds his doppelgänger, a homicidal drifter.
Australia Releases
The Revenant (Fox, Region B)
Synopsis:
A man of many adventures, Hugh Glass goes West in 1822 in the employ of Captain Andrew Henry to do some profitable fur trapping. He is attacked by a bear, and badly injured. Miraculously, he survives, but the terrain makes it impossible to carry him back. Henry tries, but eventually hires two mercenaries to simply stand watch and bury him. They abandon Glass, alone and defenseless, but unfortunately for them, he recovers. He resolves to hunt down the men who abandoned him.
The Hallow (Monster Pictures, Region B)
Synopsis:
A family who moved into a remote mill house in Ireland finds themselves in a fight for survival with demonic creatures living in the woods.
Hyena (Eagle Entertainment, Region B)
Synopsis:
Good policing doesn’t necessarily mean doing everything by the book. But as the business of crime in London turns to favour the Albanians and Turks, how does a “good” policeman survive?
Regression (Roadshow Entertainment, Region B)
Synopsis:
A detective and a psychoanalyst uncover evidence of a satanic cult while investigating the rape of a young woman.
Rise of the Footsoldier: Part II
Synopsis:
The life of underworld icon Carlton Leach.

Brazilian Werewolf Fable ‘Good Manners’ Finally Gets Physical Media Release
One of contemporary horror’s best werewolf movies is 2017’s Good Manners, and it’s finally set to receive a proper physical media release.
Icarus Films is partnering with OCN Distribution to unleash a new Blu-ray that’s now available to preorder via Vinegar Syndrome. and with a limited edition slipcover.
Set in São Paulo, the film follows Clara, a lonely nurse from the outskirts of the city who is hired by mysterious and wealthy Ana to be the nanny of her soon to be born child. Against all odds, the two women develop a strong bond. But a fateful night marked by a full moon changes their plans.
Good Manners is the second collaboration between filmmakers Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, who write and direct. Zama’s Rui Poças‘ cinematography captures this unique werewolf tale described as “Disney meets Jacques Tourneur.”
Our own Trace Thurman wrote in his review, “With Good Manners, Rojas and Dutro have made one of the best werewolf movies ever made. That they are able juggle commentaries on racism and classism while still managing to tell two deeply affecting love stories is remarkable.”
