Brian Trenchard Smith Fans Rejoice – ‘The Man from Hong Kong’ is Coming to Blu-ray!

Published

on

I’ve written about Brian Trenchard-Smith a number of times here on Bloody Disgusting. The BMX Bandits director is undoubtedly one of my favorites and one of the most underrated directors around. Slowly but surely I think more folks have started realizing just how talented BTS is. Last year two of his films, Turkey Shoot and The Seige of Firebase Gloria, made the jump to Blu-ray. Earlier this year it was announced that Arrow Video will be releasing Dead-End Drive-In in September. And now this week Umbrella Entertainment, based out of Trenchard-Smith’s home country of Australia, announced a newly remastered 4K transfer of The Man from Hong Kong.

Synopsis:
Hong Kong inspector Fang Sing Leng travels to Australia to extradite a drug dealer. When he hood is assassinated on his way to court, everyone suspects Jack Wilton, a crime lord who the local police haven’t been able to pick up.

That synopsis, courtesy of IMDB doesn’t even begin to get into the awesome-ness contain within this movie. Jimmy Wang (Master of the Flying Guillotine) stars as Inspector Fang with George Lazenby (James freakin’ Bond!) as the villain Wilton. Plus the amazing Grant Page serves as stunt coordinator as plays an assassin in the film. Oh and John Seale is the second unit camera man. Seale is only the DP of films like Mad Max: Fury Road, The Hitcher and a whole lot more.

Simply put, this is one of the most fun, crazy action movies I have ever seen. Absolutely worth your time. The fact that we’re getting this film on Blu-ray is an absolute treat but oh wait, there is more! Check out these special features!

Special Features:
-THE MAN FROM HONG KONG newly remastered 1080P HD release from an exclusive 4k transfer
-Audio commentary featuring Director BRIAN TRENCHARD-SMITH
-The Making Of THE MAN FROM HONG KONG
-Newsreel Footage
-Uncut NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD interviews with cast members GEORGE LAZENBY, REBECCA GILLING and ROGER WARD, writer/director BRIAN TRENCHARD-SMITH, executive producer DAVID HANNAY and second-unit cameraman JOHN SEALE.
-Trailers From Hell – Brian Trenchard Smith discusses THE MAN FROM HONG KONG
-Deleted Scenes
-Alternative cut of Theatrical Trailer
-HD Theatrical Trailer
-Exclusive 24 page booklet featuring stills and a new discussion of THE MAN FROM HONG KONG by Brian Trenchard-Smith PLUS an excerpt from his new novel THE HEADSMAN’S DAUGHTER

As far as special features go, that’s pretty loaded, no? Well, we’re just getting started! This release also contains 5 other BTS films! And some of these films have bonus content! What?!

Bonus Films:
-DEATHCHEATERS (feature) plus Audio Commentary featuring BRIAN TRENCHARD-SMITH
-STUNT ROCK (feature) plus Audio Commentary featuring BRIAN TRENCHARD-SMITH Promo & Reel Theatrical Trailer
-KUNG-FU KILLERS (feature)
-DANGERFREAKS (feature) plus Theatrical Trailer
-THE STUNTMEN (feature)

If you’re keeping track that makes for a total of 7 Brian Trenchard-Smith movies coming home his year, 6 alone on this one release. That’s amazing. Now my understanding is that the bonus films will be SD as opposed to HD like The Man from Hong Kong, but given these films have been hard, if not impossible, to find I’m not going to complain about that.

Naturally most BD readers are located in the US and if you’re one such reader you may have some questions about the region coding on this specific release. Typically, Australia is region B, meaning that if you’re in the US you need a region free player. For this specific release Umbrella hasn’t made mention of what the region code will be, but I can tell you from experience that most Australian releases tend to end up being region free even when they are listed as otherwise. So I can’t confirm this will be region free but I think there’s a chance it will be.

The release is scheduled for October 5th and can be pre-ordered from UmbrellaEnt.com.au
