NETFLIX: Horror Films Streaming This September

Published

on

October is only a month away so I was expecting the streaming services to ramp up their genre catalog. Unfortunately, Netflix isn’t really boosting it by all that much, although this September we’ll see all of the Jaws films added to their service.

What else? Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey is back, as well as Scary Movie 2 and Platinum Dunes’ remake of The Amityville Horror.

Here’s a complete breakdown of the genre release with the full list at the bottom.

September 1

The Amityville Horror (2005)

Andrew Douglas directed the remake starring Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George and a baby Chloë Grace Moretz. “Newlyweds are terrorized by demonic forces after moving into a large house that was the site of a grisly mass murder a year before.

Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991)

Pete Hewitt directed the sequel to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure starring Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, and William Sadler. “A tyrant from the future creates evil android doubles of Bill and Ted and sends them back to eliminate the originals.

Hellevator: Season 1

On ‘Hellavator’, a team of three friends rides a haunted elevator into various levels of an abandoned warehouse. One player must get out on each floor and conquer a frightening challenge in order to earn money for the team. But if they don’t make it back in time, the elevator moves on without them. Horror film icons Jen and Sylvia Soska, aka the “Twisted Twins,” pull the strings throughout the game – taking delight in the horror.

Jaws (1975)

Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary and Murray Hamilton. “An insatiable great white shark terrorizes the townspeople of Amity Island, The police chief, an oceanographer and a grizzled shark hunter seek to destroy the bloodthirsty beast.

Jaws 2 (1978)

Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) must spring into action once more when another blood-thirsty shark begins attacking Amity residents.

Jaws 3 (1983)

The sons of police chief Brody must protect civilians at a Sea World theme park after a 35-foot shark becomes trapped in the park with them.

Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

A shark terrorizes the Brody family during their vacation in the Caribbean, and Ellen (Lorraine Gary) is certain it’s out for revenge.

Scary Movie 2 (2001)

Spoofing Scream, four teens are tricked by their professor into visiting a haunted house for a school project.

Sweeney Todd (2007)

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton join forces again in a big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical thriller “Sweeney Todd.” Depp stars in the title role as a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment…

The Wicker Man (2006)

Nicolas Cage stars as a sheriff investigating the disappearance of a young girl from a small island discovers there’s a larger mystery to solve among the island’s secretive, neo-pagan community.

September 15

The Walking Dead: Season 6

Season Six starts with Alexandria’s safety shattered by multiple threats. To make it, the people of Alexandria will need to catch up with our survivors’ hardness while many of Rick’s people will need to take a step back from the violence and pragmatism they’ve needed to embrace. These reversals won’t happen easily, or without conflict. But now Rick’s group is fighting for something more than survival… They’re fighting for their home, and they will defend that at any cost, against any threat, even if that threat comes from within.

“The Walking Dead: The Complete Sixth Season cast includes Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Lennie James, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Sonequa Martin-Green, Seth Gilliam, Michael Cudlitz, Alanna Masterson, Christian Serratos, Josh McDermitt, Ross Marquand, Austin Nichols, Alexandra Breckenridge and Tovah Feldshuh.

“The Walking Dead” Season 7 premieres on AMC this October.

September 17

Penny Dreadful: Season 3

An erotically-charged, profoundly unsettling new saga, ‘Penny Dreadful’ completely reinvents literature’s most iconic and terrifying characters. Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and timeless figures from Dracula join a core of original characters in a dark and brutal quest to save a soul — even as they grapple with their own monstrous temptations.

It stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green.

September 30

Scream: Season 2

Season 2 of ‘Scream’ picks up with Emma’s (Willa Fitzgerald) return to Lakewood after several months at a retreat, where she tried to recover from the horrors of last season. Everyone is walking on eggshells around her, questioning whether she has truly gotten over the Killer’s crimes. Meanwhile, Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) is hiding her connection to the Killer, but is getting harassed by someone who knows the truth. Brooke (Carlson Young) and Jake (Tom Maden) are also keeping secrets—they are hiding a budding romance from Mayor Maddox (Bryan Batt). And, Noah (John Karna) is getting closer and closer to the truth about the season 1 murders. Lakewood’s murderous past, both recent and distant, are once again brought to focus – with this Killer’s psychotic mind-game intent on bringing Lakewood’s heroes down in a storm of betrayal and bloodshed.

Get ready for double the fun, protagonists, and body count when Ready or Not 2: Here I Come explodes on streaming next week.

Just in time for the fireworks, the sequel makes its streaming debut on Hulu and Disney+ on July 2.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett are back, along with Samara Weaving, for more hide and slay mayhem.

Picking up moments after the all-out attack from the Le Domas family in the first Ready or Not movie, Grace (Weaving) discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game — and this time with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) at her side. Grace has one chance to survive, keep her sister alive, and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.

That means a higher body count and even more explosive carnage. Just how much? A whopping 325 gallons worth, the directors previously told BD.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, David Cronenberg, Elijah Wood, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng, Varun Saranga, and Daniel Beirne also star.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “More is more in Ready or Not 2. Bigger stakes, larger playing field, a higher (and more gruesome) body count, and even double the protagonists. It’s all designed to deliver maximum crowd-pleasing fun.”

The horror-comedy sequel is written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.
