Umbrella Entertainment, one of my favorite companies, will be releasing Chuck Russell’s The Blob on Blu-ray this November. According to Blu-ray.com that release is scheduled for November 2nd making this release only a week away. Umbrella Entertainment currently doesn’t have a date listed on their website but Australian retailer JB Hi-Fi also has a release date of November 2nd so I think we can safely assume that date is accurate. Whatever the case may be this is very exciting news.
Some of you may remember that Twilight Time did release this version of The Blob on Blu-ray in the US a while back, but that version has long been sold out and is now going for a starting price of about $75. I can’t confirm for sure but odds are this release from Umbrella will be region free making for a much more affordable option for those of us in the US.
There will be two different versions of this release. A standard release that contains just Russell’s version of the film with some special features and then a 2-disc set exclusively available from JB Hi-Fi that includes the Russell version along with the 1958 original and Son of the Blob. Full details on both releases below!
The Blob
Synopsis:
In a tiny California town, high school students Brian (Kevin Dillon,Entourage), Meg (Shawnee Smith, SAW) and Paul (Donovan Leitch Jr, Glory) discover an unusual gelatinous substance with the ability to remove flesh off any living creatures in its path. The deadly blob-like matter infiltrates the town’s sewer system and continues to grow exponentially, threatening the lives of unsuspecting townspeople.
A grisly and inspired remake of the 1958 Steve McQueen B-Movie classic, with an acute angle on horror, The Blob is directed by Chuck Russell (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3) and adapted by Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead, The Shawshank Redemption).

The Blob (1958)
An innovative blend of ’50s schlock sci-fi paranoia and good old fashioned teen delinquency shapes The Blob into a cult classic experience of mass proportions!Moulding the genre with chills and thrills, director Irvin S. Yeaworth (Dinosaurus!) places a troup of troubled teenagers into the middle of mayhem when a mysterious creature from another planet lands in their small township and spreads itself across the landscape in a gelatinous state of lingering menace. Determined to warn the public of impending doom, young Steve Andrews (action hero Steve McQueen in his first starring role) charges his classic Plymouth Cranbrook convertible into action and rises to the impossible blood-curdling challenge.
