New to Blu – Week of 6/20/2017
Each week here at Bloody Disgusting we like to highlight some of the new Blu-ray releases hitting shelves across the world. Please note that this isn’t every release for the week, just a few of the ones that jumped out at us.
This is a week of releases! We’ve got a big modern genre release in Life, we’ve got 80’s gems Hack-o-Lantern & Humongous, we’ve got the underrated 8 Million Ways to Die and we have the wonderful Paul Naschy collection from Scream Factory, which is 5 awesome Naschy films! And none of that is the best release this week. The big one, the best of this terrific week, is Arrow Video’s wonderful release of Dario Argento’s classic The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Get to collecting!
US Releases
Thunderbirds Are Go/Thunderbird 6 (Kino Lorber, Region A)
Synopsis:
Thunderbirds Are Go: Zero-X, a manned exploration mission crashes during lift-off on its maiden flight. Two years later an investigative committee finally concludes sabotage, and decides to call on the services of International Rescue to oversee security at the impending second launch. The second Zero-X successfully reaches its destination, but encounters unexpected hazards, ultimately leading to another call for assistance on its return to Earth. International Rescue respond, and once again Thunderbirds are GO! Thunderbird 6: The International Rescue team is faced with one of its toughest challenges yet, as the revolutionary lighter-than-air craft Skyship One is hijacked while on her maiden voyage around the world. Against backdrops including the Statue of Liberty and the Sphinx, Lady Penelope, Parker, Alan and Tin-Tin fight the hijackers from on-board, while the rest of the team tries to stop the airship crashing into a missile silo.
Railroad Tigers (Well Go USA, Region A)
Synopsis:
Set in the 1941, “Railroad Tigers” is about the Chinese heroes of World War II. Chan stars as Ma Yuan, a railroad worker and unlikely hero. He uses what he knows of the train network to steal supplies for the hungry Chinese. He leads a team of fighters in ambushing enemy soldiers and stopping the Japanese.
Hack-o-Lantern (Massacre Video, Region A)
Synopsis:
A kindly old grandfather is actually the leader of a murderous satanic cult which sacrifices its victims on Halloween.
8 Million Ways to Die (Kino Lorber, Region A)
Synopsis:
Scudder is a detective with the Sheriff’s Department who is forced to shoot a violent suspect during a narcotics raid. The ensuing psychological aftermath of this shooting worsens his drinking problem and this alcoholism causes him to lose his job, as well as his marriage. During his recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous, he meets a mysterious stranger who draws him back into a world of vice. In trying to help this beautiful woman, he must enter a crime-world of prostitution and drugs to solve a murder, while resisting the temptation to return to his alcohol abuse.
Altitude (Lionsgate, Region A)
Synopsis:
A female FBI agent is offered millions to help a thief escape from a hijacked airplane.
Island of Terror (Scream Factory, Region A)
Synopsis:
An isolated remote island community is threatened by an attack by tentacled silicates which liquefy and digest bone and tissue.
Humongous (Scorpion Releasing, Region A)
Synopsis:
Woman is raped at cocktail party. Years later, her son grows up to be a big hairy murderous monster who stalks a group of teens shipwrecked on his island.
The Paul Naschy Collection (Scream Factory, Region A)
Synopsis:
Collection of 5 Paul Naschy films.
Life (Sony, Region A)
Synopsis:
An international space crew discovers life on Mars.
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Arrow, Region A)
Synopsis:
In his first film as writer/director, Dario Argento single-handedly created the giallo genre and instantly emerged as the filmmaker critics worldwide hailed as ‘The Italian Hitchcock.’ A writer from the US in Rome witnesses – and is helpless to stop – a brutal assault, the cunning vengeance of a maniac, and the heart-stopping horror that lives – and kills – deep in the dark.
The Lawnmower Man (Scream Factory, Region A)
Synopsis:
A scientist performs experiments involving intelligence enhancing drugs and virtual reality on a simple-minded gardener. He puts the gardener on an extensive schedule of learning, and quickly he becomes brilliant. But at this point the gardener has a few ideas of his own on how the research should continue, and the scientist begins losing control of his experiments…
UK Releases

Man Hunt (Signal One Entertainment, Region B)
Synopsis:
British hunter Thorndike vacationing in Bavaria has Hitler in his gun sight. He is captured, beaten, left for dead, and escapes back to London where he is hounded by German agents and aided by a young woman.
Death in the Garden (Eureka Entertainment, Region B)
Synopsis:
Chark, an adventurer comes to small village in the near of a gold digger’s camp. He is arrested by the local police…

‘Hokum’ Heads Home to Digital Tomorrow Ahead of Physical Media Release in August
After scaring up a strong theatrical run, Oddity director Damian McCarthy’s Hokum heads home to Digital this week.
Settle in for a spooky supernatural chiller as Hokum arrives on all Digital platforms to rent or own beginning June 2, followed by a Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD Combo and DVD release on August 11, 2026.
Adam Scott (“Severance”) stars in Hokum as reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman. When he retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s tales of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite take hold of his mind. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance draw Ohm into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past.
Peter Coonan (“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness”), David Wilmot (“Station Eleven”), Florence Ordesh (“Departure”), Michael Patric (“Frontier”), Will O’Connell (“Game of Thrones”), Brendan Conroy (“Bodkin”), and Austin Amelio (“The Walking Dead”) also star.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “A quaint Irish hotel with a deeply haunted history awaits an American writer in McCarthy’s third outing, continuing his streak for folkloric tales of supernatural karma and spine-tingling terror with a dark sense of humor.”
What’s next from Damian McCarthy? He’s currently writing a haunted house movie, but recent comments suggest he may be moving into other genres beyond that upcoming project.
