NETFLIX Horror Films Streaming in August 2017
Summer is flying by and we’ve only one more month until fall hits. Still, Netflix is bringing us a handful of horror goods to the streaming service this coming August, including the Funny Games remake, and Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, which has aged quite well. It’s also time to revisit The Addams Family (and MC Hammer’s “Rap”) before being treating to the end-of-summer U.S. adaptation of Death Note, directed by genre fav Adam Wingard (You’re Next, V/H/S, V/H/S/2,
The Guest).
AUGUST 1
Funny Games (2007)
When Ann, husband George and son Georgie arrive at their holiday home they are visited by a pair of polite and seemingly pleasant young men. Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Master storyteller Tim Burton (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) weaves an eerie, enchanting version of this classic tale of horror. Johnny Depp is Ichabod Crane, an eccentric investigator determined to stop the murderous Headless Horseman. Christina Ricci is Katrina Van Tassel, the beautiful and mysterious girl with secret ties to the supernatural terror.
The Addams Family (1991)
Come join The Addams Family for the most hilarious scarefest of this season or any other! When long-lost Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) reappears after twenty-five years in the Bermuda Triangle, Gomez (Raul Julia) and Morticia (Anjelica Huston) plan a celebration to wake the dead. But Wednesday (Christina Ricci) barely has time to warm up her electric chair before Thing points out Fester’s uncommonly “normal” behavior. Could this Fester be a fake, part of an evil scheme to raid the Addams fortune?
The Number 23
Jim Carrey reteams with his Batman Forever director, Joel Schumacher, for this dark psychological thriller, which revolves around a man who becomes haunted by the fact that he’s reading a book about his own life . . . and that the book ends in his murder. The Number 23 is both the title of the film and the book within the film, and the number 23 is intertwined in the plot of the novel and, therefore, the man’s real life.
AUGUST 10
Diary of an Exorcist – Zero
When an unexplained family tragedy shatters his family, young Lucas Vidal awakens to the challenging task to face the greatest enemy of man and God, the Devil himself. The story of Father Lucas Vidal (one of the greatest exorcist priest in Latin America) is documented in horrifying details. Discover the battle of exorcists priests against these terrible unholy creatures that grow in number and power every day. The evil was released and no longer know who is human and who It is the devil. How can the exorcist priests face the unconscionable power of darkness?

Brazilian Werewolf Fable ‘Good Manners’ Finally Gets Physical Media Release
One of contemporary horror’s best werewolf movies is 2017’s Good Manners, and it’s finally set to receive a proper physical media release.
Icarus Films is partnering with OCN Distribution to unleash a new Blu-ray that’s now available to preorder via Vinegar Syndrome. and with a limited edition slipcover.
Set in São Paulo, the film follows Clara, a lonely nurse from the outskirts of the city who is hired by mysterious and wealthy Ana to be the nanny of her soon to be born child. Against all odds, the two women develop a strong bond. But a fateful night marked by a full moon changes their plans.
Good Manners is the second collaboration between filmmakers Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, who write and direct. Zama’s Rui Poças‘ cinematography captures this unique werewolf tale described as “Disney meets Jacques Tourneur.”
Our own Trace Thurman wrote in his review, “With Good Manners, Rojas and Dutro have made one of the best werewolf movies ever made. That they are able juggle commentaries on racism and classism while still managing to tell two deeply affecting love stories is remarkable.”
BONUS FEATURES:
- Commentary from film critics Shelagh Rowan-Legg and Carolyn Mauricette
- 12-page booklet with an essay by film critic Nicolas Pedrero-Setzer
- Making-of short film: The Making of a Werewolf (2 mins)
- Two additional short films from the filmmakers: A STEM (15 mins), directed by Juliana Rojas & Marco Dutras, and DOPPELGANGER (24 mins), directed by Juliana Rojas
