New to Blu – Week of 10/10/2017
Each week here at Bloody Disgusting we like to highlight some of the new Blu-ray releases hitting shelves across the world. Please note that this isn’t every release for the week, just a few of the ones that jumped out at us.
The second week of October releases is a bit on the light side but heavy on quality! Kino Lorber has two new Mario Bava releases out this week with Kill, Baby…Kill! and Roy Colt and Winchester Jack. For Bava fans those two are mandatory purchases for this week. The Poughkeepsie Tapes from Scream Factory and The Green Slime from Warner Archive are the other big US releases for me this week. So the releases may be few, but what we’ve got our great!
US Releases
The Poughkeepsie Tapes (Scream Factory, Region A)
Synopsis:
In an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York murder investigators uncover hundreds of tapes showing decades of a serial killer’s work.
The Lure (Criterion, Region A)
Synopsis:
In Warsaw, a pair of mermaid sisters are adopted into a cabaret. While one seeks love with humans the other hungers to dine on the human population of the city.
Baby Driver (Sony, Region A)
Synopsis:
A talented, young getaway driver relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss, he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.
The Green Slime (Warner Archive, Region A)
Synopsis:
After destroying a huge asteroid that was on a rapid collision course with Earth, a group of astronauts discover they have accidentally returned to their space station with an alien slime creature that feeds on radiation and can reproduce rapidly from its own blood.
Roy Colt and Winchester Jack (Kino Lorber, Region A)
Synopsis:
Two outlaws compete with each other over a treasure map that will lead them to buried gold while one of them is in league with a sadistic priest-turned-crime lord, while a young Native American girl helps both outlaws and plays both sides against each other.
Wish Upon (Broad Green Pictures, Region A)
Synopsis:
A teenage girl discovers a box with magic powers, but it comes with a deadly price.
Open Water 3: Cage Dive (Lionsgate, Region A)
Synopsis:
Three friends filming an audition tape for an extreme reality show take part in shark cage diving, only to be left in great white infested waters, turning their recording into life and death.
Blood Feast (Arrow, Region A)
Synopsis:
Mrs. Dorothy Fremont wants to throw a very special dinner party for her daughter Suzette. She calls on a local caterer, Fuad Ramses, who promises to prepare her an Egyptian feast, one that has not been prepared for 5,000 years. Suzette’s boyfriend, police detective Pete Thornton, is investigating a series of grisly murders. Someone has been attacking young women and harvesting various organs and body parts. What no one realizes is that Fuad Ramses is the killer and needs the body parts to resurrect a long dead goddess…
Kill, Baby…Kill! (Kino Lorber, Region A)
Synopsis:
In the beginning of the Twentieth Century, the Dr. Eswai is called by Inspector Kruger to a small village to perform an autopsy on a woman who has died under suspicious circumstances. Despite help from Ruth, the village witch, Kruger is killed and it is revealed that the dead woman, as well as other villagers, have been killed by the ghost of Melissa, a young girl who, fed by the hatred of her grieving mother, Baroness Graps, exacts her revenge on them. Dr. Eswai, along with Monica, a local nurse, are lured into a fateful confrontation at the Villa Graps…

Bewitched (88 Films, Region B)
Synopsis:
While possessed by an evil spirit, a man murders his daughter. A police detective investigating the case also becomes possessed. A good monk helps fight the evil spirit.
Pigs (88 Films, Region B)
Synopsis:
Lynn Hart is a disturbed young woman who escapes from a mental hospital where she was committed for killing her abusive father who raped her. Stealing a nurse’s uniform and car, Lynn ends up in a small California town where she meets and shacks up with Zambrini, an old farmer who runs the local motel and roadside café. Zambrini also owns a group of pigs that he keeps in a pen behind his house who have somehow developed a taste for human flesh. When Lynn begins killing a number of men who remind her of her dead father, Zambrini helps her out by disposing of the bodies to the pigs. Investigating the disappearances, the local sheriff eventually becomes suspicious of Lynn’s past and a private investigator, hired by the hospital to find her, slowly close in on Lynn.
Scream Factory brought Frank LaLoggia’s 1988 Halloween movie Lady in White to Blu-ray several years back, and now Vinegar Syndrome gives the film a 4K Ultra HD upgrade.

1962. Nine-year-old Frankie Scarlatti enjoys a homespun childhood in a rustic Western New York town. The entire community gets into the spirit of Halloween, but then two bullies prank Frankie by locking him in his school cloakroom, leaving him trapped for the night. Alone and afraid, his slumber is interrupted when the ghost of a little girl appears, and Frankie witnesses the specter of her murder by an unseen assailant. Later, while recovering at home, the girl’s ghost appears to him again. With help from his older brother, Frankie begins investigating the circumstances of her death. He soon discovers that her murder was one of several unsolved crimes connected to a local child-killer. As the town’s bucolic veneer fades and long-buried secrets and tensions bubble to the surface, all of the clues to the mystery seem to point towards a huge mansion inhabited by a reclusive woman known as “The Lady in White.”
A nostalgia-driven ghost story wrapped within an intricate murder mystery and coming-of-age drama, writer-director-composer Frank LaLoggia’s passion project Lady in White remains one of the most beautiful and original American horror films of the 1980s. Featuring acclaimed actors Alex Rocco (The Godfather), Len Cariou (Executive Decision), and Sydney Lassick (Carrie, The Unseen), it boasts the first starring role by Lukas Haas (Mars Attacks, Inception) as well as breathtaking photography by Academy Award® winner Russell Carpenter (True Lies, The Lawnmower Man). Vinegar Syndrome is honored to bring this genre masterpiece to 4K UHD, newly restored from its original 35mm camera negative and presented in three versions: its pre-release director’s cut, its extended home-video version, and its original theatrical version, along with an abundance of both new and archival extras.
Paul Lê wrote here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2023, “Over the years, fans have described this film as gateway horror, but they liken it more to The Watcher in the Woods than, say, Hocus Pocus or Casper. There are chilling moments that warrant its PG-13 rating.”
